If you're of a certain age, your birth certificate should say Columbia Hospital for Women, not Sibley. And there should be at least one Garfinckel's box or bag kicking around somewhere in your attic.

Would a Garfinckel's hat box do? What if said box contains a hat with a Julius Garfinckel label?

Also, you would need to have a fur coat from Saks Jandel. A full length one. And, a Washington Charge Plate.

You are my people. My parents were born and raised in Connecticut. Transplants here. Prep schools and University in New England. My mom and her best friend neighbor would pick me up when I faked sick in elementary school and take me on their Garfinckel’s shopping trips.I can still picture that store. Also, the old Lord&Taylor.

I agree DC prep is nothing like New England Prep. The most dressed down my dad got was his worn, old Lacoste polos.

Puuuuuleeeeese don't bring the NE comparison up. Apples and oranges, people.

And nothing raises a southerners (including DC) hackles like mentioning the NE.

There is nothing - literally not one thing - “southern” about DC/NoVA/MOCO. Nothing.

/actual southerner.

Thank goodness for that.

You are missing volunteer work: starting 1X week in KDG at BVR and advancing to 8 hours a week 10th& 11th grade. This is both because your parents also volunteer for several organizations and its just what is expected.

Lots of sports: from Pre-K parents will likely have had you playing ice hockey or soccer, minimum but also tennis and ballet plus an instrument.

Some time in HS you will be expected to score some impressive internship or academic fellowship. This is because your parents did the same as did their parents. This all leads up to interning on the Hill, clerking for SCOTUS while at Harvard Law, etc....

what else was left out: CIT job at camp in VT, Maine or NH and Summers at Squam

I’m a DC native (Georgetown hospital), third generation Green Book, etc, but left DC years ago. This post was somewhat amusing for the inaccuracies and blatant materialism. One of the hallmarks of true old DC class was that people didn’t care a whit for brands. It was much more fun back then (I’m mid-30s so it was actually even more fun when my mom was growing up).

So many of these answers are so off! You guys are such a bunch of posers. So obvious you aren't from here.

Sibley has no status these days. It's a third world hospital...with hardly any private rooms.

Any woman with a brain delivers at GWU or GHU instead.

Its for old people, not babies.

That is not what this lame thread is about.

Spot on.

Also add Kent and Foxhall areas. So true. It's funny because the kids that grew up in places like Cleveland Park are what we'd call "hipsters" today.

Exactly. Ideally your NW neighborhood should be barely accessible by MetroBus, and far, far away from any MetroRail stations.

What is Shippins?

Maine
No. At an NGO in NYC and an "art gallery" (tax writeoff) in London

A proper female prep will work in any of the following fields:
Auction House (esp. Sotheby's)
Gallery
Pre-School Teacher
At a magazine, ideally Martha Stewart
As an interior decorator

Oh hells no. Do NOT make me sit next to another "interior decorator" senators' wife...please...

If you are from Morocco, Swaziland or Lesotho maybe you are a legit princess.

If you are from Zululand, Ghana, Zambia, Uganda, Nigeria, Congo or Ethiopia you are a poseur.

I will not tell you what country I am from, but I am definitely not a poseur….

Her Excellency, Princess A…..

That’s all great. But it’s not preppy, which is what we were talking about.
