Student faces expulsion from school due to her natural hair

Would you prefer she put chemicals in her hair to straighten it?

This is a really important question that deserves a proper conversation about race, gender expectations, and notions of feminine beauty/propriety.

The last, what, 15-20 years of straight hairstyling trends have been a curse to those of us with ethnic hair, my own Jew-fro included. Such a backlash against those who decline to take the extraordinary measures necessary for making smooth and sleek happen-- such unnatural things they'd have to do that it really shouldn't be asked of them!

And it's a problem that, for women, permitting ethnic characteristics to remain visible leaves them open to charges of ugliness, untidiness, or unprofessionalism.

No thanks! Let our girls, all of them, keep their natural hair as it is.

Do not bother the Pope; it's a Christian school, not a Catholic school.

No it's not. It's really, really not.

All kids that age seek attention.

What's your point?

Catholics aren't Christian? You must mean that it's a Protestant school.

Nothing is wrong with the girl's hair. I have seen worse in my DC's PRIVATE school - much worse! And for those who say that private schools can enforce whatever rules they want - actually they cannot, depending on the state.

I think the school is on slippery ice here. "Distracting" is very subjective! If the girl decided to stay at the school and I were her parent, I would be posted up every day at drop off with a camera. The school and I would have a VERY serious discussion about what "distracting" is.

I was kidding.

But in all honesty, as one who attended a Catholic school through HS, we were "taught" to separate our faith from other Christian faiths. So while Catholics are Christians - or under that umbrella - they do see themselves as different. special maybe?

no longer practicing, btw

shocking, I know . . .

And I agree with the poster above (if I read her/him correctly), true Christians (or followers of Christ) wouldn't be so harsh and narrow- minded. So the school is Christian in name only.

I love her hair. And her face. And her color. And her spirit.

And she needs to sue these assholes.

Catholics are Christians but not all Christians are Catholic. This school is Chrisitan but not associated with the Catholic Church. The website is not clear what type of Christian school it is. For example, St. Albans is a Chrisitian school, Episcopal, but not a Catholic School.

If you don't like the rules, go elsewhere where there are different rules. They CHOSE this school; it's not required. They just wanted the publicity.

DISTRACTION is not a specific rule -- it is a subject assessment.
When the rule says ALL HAIR MUST BE WORN IN A PONYTAIL OR BRAIDED OR NO LONGER THAN 10 INCHES LONG -- then you can talk.
But when the rule is totally subjective and up to the whim of administrators cow-towing to bullies, then you are barking up the wrong tree.

Do you understand the concept of cultural competency? Wait, am I really asking this person that question?

I love you pp!!!!!

I guess is that Jesus would be expelled from this "Christian" school -- because he looked like her -- yes he did!

And the flower. Unnecessary.

I went to catholic school and they're extremely picky. They knew that going in.

I was not allowed to wear my hair down either and I complied.

You have a problem with a 12 year-old girl wearing a flower in her hair? Really?

NP here. This is not a Hawaiian Luau. This is an educational institution for goodness sakes.
Then for goodness sakes no ribbons, no barettes, no head bands, and bobby pins must be black only.

Now the school says it will not ask her to straighten or cut her hair.
This whole thing is very sad, ESPECIALLY since this is a supposedly "Christian" school. They are telling this girl that the hair God gave her is not good enough. It's not unkempt, it's just big.

And there you have it in a nutshell. I pray they are misinterpreting other things in the Bible about people of color.

Sorry....that should be not misinterpreting.
