The problem with your logic is that you haven't defined "Golden Rule." For religious people it's the 10 Commandments, keeping kosher, following Jesus' commands to live your neighbor, or paying zakat and doing the Hajj.

For you, the Golden Rule might involve honesty and kindness, but for someone else it might just mean, just don't kill anyone as you make your millions (whoever has the gold makes the rules). I think the PP is saying, morals can be really fuzzy if you make them up yourself. George Bernard Shaw pointed out that how I want to be treated is probably different in many ways from how you want to be treated. Basically, the Golden Rule reflects dominant societal values at the time - and that has not always been a good thing.

So no, platitudes about the Golden Rule aren't much help.

Problem here is that sprinkling deities on top of the cupcake doesn't get you any further. While morals can be really fuzzy if you make them up yourself, morals can be equally fuzzy if you make them up yourself based on your "study" of a "sacred" book. Or just "looking into your heart to see what Jesus wants you to do". Or listening to that really wise, charismatic cult...erm...I mean *megachurch* pastor who fills the pews every Sunday.

Not at all. If you are an atheist you must come to grips with the logical fact that you don't matter. You are a pile of chemicals . Your opinion and feelings are just a chemical reaction and hitler is neither good nor bad . The concept of good and bad is imaginary . You are not valuable.

Different PP, I can't figure out who the first comment was aimed at. But if it was an atheist angry about the "own it!" post, then dare I say it ... you're acting like a 5-year-old in response to this challenge to your beliefs. Or maybe you're acting like an angry, intolerant atheist, which is exactly what you accuse religious folk of doing. Don't call the "own it!" poster a troll, use your words to explain why you disagree....

It's a religious person who thinks that atheists can't "matter" or stop themselves from becoming Hitler, without religion and/or god. They have made it clear that they are unable to engage in any discussion without becoming... crazy.

Atheists have no soul. They kill and eat innumerable living things for no purpose or meaning. They are worth less than a rock that will exist long after the extinction of humanity. They are worth less than a pile of crap which although it will also turn to dust, does not kill living things or infringe on others with worthless feelings or opinions . Atheists by their own logic are at the bottom ranking of all matter in the universe.

As a rational, logical atheist, I want to be happy -- being a temporary fart, I would like my brief stay here to be pleasant. Not in the "stuff myself with Cheetos and crack" sense, but in the "personal fulfillment and satisfaction" sense, because the latter is self-perpetuating, while the former is short-lived and ultimately destructive. To do so, I want to help create a stable, just society, because that is the scenario in which I will be most likely to pursue and maintain happiness. The "just" part is critical, as life is random, and I can see myself being without the protection of power/money/family, and want to be able to pursue and achieve happiness even in that situation.

Hitlers are incompatible with my logical pursuit of happiness. I cannot truly pursue happiness with Hitlers around, because they could easily kill me and those I love, not to mention the general instability that kind of violence inevitably generates.

This, of course, assumes that the FSM continues to bless me and mine with the Marinara of His Grace.
