And u don't need cash for dc taxis either; they all take cards now.

Nope. An uber taxi bailed on me at the last minute the first time I tried to use it. When I attempted to use the service again, they refused to honor the coupon code that I had since they didn't consider it a "first ride" even though the first time I tried they were no-shows! Hate them.

The coupon code doesn't work on the TAXI services, but only on the UberX or Uber. Your driver won't know that you're using a taxi, you'll get the credit after your first ride.

I use uberx pretty exclusively for all of the reasons that others cite above
1. ability to hail a car using my smartphone and see where that car is
2. price - usually lower than a regular taxi during non-peak hours
3. courteous drivers and nice cars
4. proximity to locations that I frequent -- petworth, shaw, etc.
5. convenience - no need to carry cash

It wasn't the uber driver that refused to honor the code but uber itself. Had two bad experiences and am convinced this is all just hype. VA taxis are much more reliable.

How's it hype? Most people and drivers love it. It's not hype.

And if only jerkwad DC taxis actually did take credit cards and didn't claim their machines are broken.

U really can't have one unregulated service, while the other is regulated. The regulations are there for a reason and Über is one lawsuits for shutting down.

This is RIGHT! There are too many racist cab drivers all over the country. Once again we have to pay the Black tax, but it's better than waiting 20 minutes for a cab to deign to stop for you.

Love Uber. Such a lifesaver for us out here in the suburbs. Regular taxis seem to think waiting 45+ mins for them to arrive is perfectly OK. The Uber comes right away.

The liability angle is reason enough for me to never use them.

Taxis are set up to avoid liability, too, but at least they are regulated.

I don't see how you can have a two-tier system with some in a free for all and others regulated (as this industry should be).

Are you or someone in your family a taxi driver?

and whoever said taxis all take cards has obviously not tried to use a card in a cab in 2014. I've tried to do that. Half the time they mysteriously don't work. Which is fine. I don't tip those lairs. I hate cabs and would gladly help uber lobby rather than loose them.

There would be no market for Uber if taxis provided a quality, reliable service.

It costs more but it is also superior in every single way, better cars, more reliable service, easy billing. Who gives a F if it isn't regulated? Seriously?

In my younger partying days I had many issues trying to get a safe ride home from DC cabs to VA, now that there is Uber I will never cab again- if you think regulations for cabs keep you safe than you are extremely naive- I have never had someone be creepy or cross the line in an Uber car, I have never been refused a ride home, I have never been in a Uber car that hit another car and then was stranded till 5 am held hostage (not really, but they refused to let me get another ride home because they needed my fare now to repair their taxi after the accident they caused...) Cab's aren't safe, or they aren't any safer than Uber- and in my experience Uber is more than willing to make it right if you have a bad experience, not true with cabs...

No, the DO NOT all take cards now; many times I've been told "machine broken!" - of course, that information only comes out later. DC cabbies are the worst!

Years ago I came out of Au Pied de Cachon w/ a then girlfriend and we noticed a disgruntled-looking AA youth trying to hail a cab; we were a little tipsie & asked him whats up.

Turns out no D.C. cabbie would stop for him! Said that several empty cabs had just passed him by. I believe him.

I asked the girlfriend to try to hail a cab (we are white). No surprise the very next cab stopped for her. We laughed as we opened the cab door for the AA guy & continued walking home. That cabbie looked really pissed off!. But good - screw all those those racist, rude, crooked pricks driving D.C. cabs.

God, I couldn't even tell you the number of times cabs have passed me by, and I'm a white female. Or, when I tell them where I'm going they have ordered me out of the cab because they didn't want to drive there. And this is coming from someone who has lived in DC for 15 years, doesn't own a car and used to take cabs everywhere. It's just the DC cabs. They are assholes. It's Uber all the way from now on.
