When do you switch your kid from briefs to boxers?

My son wore tighty whiteys until he was around 13. Once things started to grow he wanted something a little looser.

DS is 10 1/2 and switched from briefs to boxer briefs about 2 years ago. Don't think he'll switch to full boxers as he doesn;t like how they bunch at the legs.

When they ask for it.

He wears traditional cotton poplin boxers to sleep in in summer. I think he will start to wear the poplin ones as he gets older and my in some boxer briefs.

What is wrong with tighty whites is they are ugly, old-fashioned, dorky, and, once he is changing in front if other boys, they will laugh their behinds off at him. It will be embarrassing for him. DS had one friend who wore cheesy character briefs in 2nd or 3rd grade. DS (and other boys) did not make fun of that boy but did ask what the heck he was wearing. They had never seen those underwear before. Starting in 4th all the boys change into PE clothes together at school so we clued his mom in before it got to that.

Mine are 14 and 16 and have never experienced that. They still wear tightie whities. They have been in charge of picking out their own underwear since 5?

Where do they go to school? What sports teams do they play on. Both are part of it (the boxer v tighty whiteys choice). Honest to God, I was taught that boys from "good families" wore boxers, the nice boys, preppy boys, private school boys. This may or may not be true but my own personal experience would support this generalization.

I'm curious about the fact that someone "taught" you about boys' underwear.

FWIW, I've never thought of preppy private school boys as being "the nice boys".

Grew up wearing briefs, switched to boxers in middle school, now it's boxer briefs. Just ask your kids what they like and let them wear that. As long as their clean, who cares.... And as far as teasing goes, wearing tw's is low in the totem pole and has 2 easy retorts... 1. Why do you care about my underwear? 2. Your mother likes them.

Problem solved

My son switched from boxer briefs to boxers when he was 7 or 8 maybe. I think boxers look uncomfortable but he likes them

My son wore tighty whities in the womb but as soon as he was born we switched him over to boxer briefs so he wouldn't be stigmatized by the other babies in the hospital baby room. Turned out okay since so many of the kids in there were still in diapers, but phew that was close!

DH wears briefs and I find them sexy. Keeping DS (4) in briefs if/until he wants to change.

I went to a fancy private prep school. Dated boys there that were popular but that I now realize were absolute jerks.

Based on that experience, I find it sexy when someone does not look like a prep school kid.

My son is 10 and still wears character and print briefs. I bought him boxers and he quickly decided they weren't for him as they have no support. Really I don't care what he wears. I let them choose what they want.

My 4 year od prefers boxer briefs.

My kid would rather go commando if given a choice.

Boxer briefs from about 5-6y (before that was character underwear.) Now at 10y - Under Armour boxer briefs.

DS 8 went right from diapers to boxers. They just seemed more comfortable to us, and he seems to be happy with them.
