2nd Grade Cognat (custom) Scores - were you surprised by them?

There are a number of academic and extracurricular activities that are not handled by the school, but are promoted and administered by third parties. Chess Club, the foreign language enrichment classes, etc. Not sure why it is an issue. Just an avenue for extra academic work outside the school.

I received cogat scores today and I was surprised because my DC did better than I expected.

Congrats to your child!

I am sure parent modesty had something to do with the difference between expectations and scores. Our kids will all surprise us now and then when we don't let our mom goggles get the better of us.

Our elementary school does a fabulous job teaching math. The pace of study often surprises us. The Kumon is an ENRICHMENT. It has not taught my DC any new concept, but repeat the calculations over and over to make it faster and more accurate. In school, my DC is working on 4th grade math. In Kumon, second grade since DC just started 4 weeks ago. Now working on only two digit regrouping, which my DC learned in first grade in elementary school.

Got the score letter today.

NNAT 99% don't remember exact score but a bit more than 132.

CogAT 86

I didn't prep at all, and I thought it will be fine even if DC is not eligible.
But knowing the CogAt % is bitter.
My DC is not even in the top 10%.

Is that 89% for Fairfax County? And your DC is in pool based on NNAT? (Still learning here.)

Oh the humanity! I would clearly be bitter about the CogAT as well. You need to look inwards and see where you failed as a parent....

What is wrong with you?
Your kid got a lower score than 86?

Can those of you, who were disappointed by your child's CogAT scores (particularly as compared to last year's NNAT scores), post their age?

I have a feeling that the lower CogAT scores are age-related, since it seems that CogAT this year wasn't adjusted for age, as all these tests typically are... Which doubly penalizes younger kids by lowering their percentile scores while at the same time, raising the percentiles of older kids.

Why don't you start a new thread asking about scores for younger summer birthdays?

Excellent question. My DS is a September kid. Got 142 in NNAT last year (99%) and 84% in CogAT this year.

My daughter got 99% on the NNAT, but only 94% on the CogAT.

94% is so close, together with the NNAT, your child should go in without additional supporting materials, I think

My son got 130 on the NNAT, and 95% on CogAT. July birthday (young).
