| Anyone else totally surprised (good or bad) with their child's 2nd grade custom Cognat scores? My child scored much lower than I would have expected. Am I alone? |
| If you are only being compared to the pool of Fairfax kids, aren't all the Asian test prep-mill kids artificially inflating the scores (and lowering the scores of the regular non-prepping people_? |
|
I was very surprised. DS scored very well on the NNAT last year and has been doing well in school. His Ffx Cogat scores were pretty mediocre, and a bit of a shock, to be honest. Then again, he's got a kind of interlligence that simply may not test well - more like an out of the box thinker, more insightful than book smart.
Perhaps it's better that he doesn't end up in AAP like his sister. I am a bit miffed, though, that they didn't use a true standardized (national) test. We're moving out of the area and these Fairfax-only tests will not translate to anywhere else. |
| I was also surprised that DC scored a bit lower on the CogAT compared to the NNAT in terms of percentile. But when you consider that the CogAT may not have been age-scored, and that we're comparing to FCPS only for the CogAT which a PP points out includes lots of test prepped kids, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Disappointed, but not too surprised. |
| It seems that there were a lot of surprises of lower CogAT scores vs. high NNAT scores last year. How about the opposite? Has anyone been surprised by a high CogAT score vs. a lower NNAT score last year? I am trying to figure out what happened with the CogAT scores this year... |
Great question. I'm the originator of this forum. My kid's scores: NNAT - 129 CogAT (custom) - 84 VQN with only a 63 on verbal. This kid has been reading since before K and has a super high vocabulary. I am totally surprised. I know a neighbor kid who could barely read last year (when he was a 2nd grader) and he scored an "87" Verbal (low)....and yet my kid gets only a 63? It just can't be right. |
Wow. I would call to set up a WISC assessment. |
| Parent refer and get a WISC. Your child will probably get in, especially if she gets a good GBRS. |
| Do the teachers get the cogat? So when they write up the GBRS after referral, will they see the low cogat? I wonder if that would color their assessment? Not OP, but curious how it works. |
You can get a WISC if you like but keep in mind these scores are in relationship to FCPS students only. On nationwide tests your kids are being compared to students in AL, TX, and other states where standards are incredibly low and kids are a year or two behind what's happening here and places like Connecticut and Mass, etc. Just something to consider. Last year kids had Cogat subscores in the 130's and that was considered 99th percentile. But scores in the 140's and 150's were 99th percentile too. Now with the new way of reading the test the 130's kids are in the high 80's and low 90's, percentile wise, and the really high ability kids get to stand alone in the 98-99th percentile rank. It separates the group fairly but for some it will be a harsh reality. |
|
I don't think you can know that 130s kids translates into 80s and 90s percentile.
|
| How can you say. The CogAT letter provides nothing; not even student ID, it only provides the percentile. |
| For all you know, a 120 could be the95%tile. Don't assume that the 95%tilers have 140-150 on the CogAT. Maybe FCPS has surprisingly LOW numbers, thus the reason FCPS didn't provide any actuals! |
| I am not surprised. We spent a good bit of time prepping, my DC did quite well. |
|
DS got 128 NNAT and 97 percentile in Cogat.
His verbal was below 90 (a little surprised), non verbal barely 90 and quantitative 98. Seems like weighting on quantitative is higher than the other two. |
