ugh, I look like a mom

OP -- I try to stick with black -- it doesn't look so mommy-like. Also, I like fancy jewelry. For your hair -- I agree that short = "mom who gave up her sexuality". Maybe ask for tips at the hair salon on how to better fix your hair. Have you tried hot rollers or a very good brush to really blow your hair out. Or maybe, go once a week to any place and have your hair blown out professionally (even cheapy places can do that) and go to Bloomingdales or some other place for makeup tips. Find a sexy scent to add to the mix.

Many of us women (including me) gave up our looks when we had kids due to comfort and lack of sleep. We all just need to try a little harder I think.

I love the PP who suggest classic staples and I always want to do this but somehow never do.

For jeans, where do you shop if you're not a size 4 or 6? I've got hips and thighs and designer jeans just don't fit me.

Agree with this. And Gap are terrible because they never fit right in the waist. I want something that will fit over some curves, hit around my belly button to avoid that horrible muffin top look, has a little stretch (but not too much) and doesn't gap in the back. Am I asking too much?

I've recommended these in other threads before, but it's worth saying again I think -- Old Navy Sweetheart style jeans. Get the Skinny jeans. Trust me. They fit a mother's body. Make sure you get them in the darkest rinse you can find. They are also cheap, so that's a bonus -- you can get several pairs, including in some colors. I wear these several days a week, even to the office, paired with a slightly more expensive top from a store with a little more personality -- H&M or Anthropologie, usually, but I also have some good finds at Old Navy, the Gap or even Target. Invest in a very nice handbag and a nice pair or two of ballet flats, one nice pair of wedges and one nice pair of boots. Also, you should have one pair of cool tennis shoes -- something like Converse or Puma are usually going to make an outfit look casual but cool. A couple scarves in bright colors or interesting patterns -- some light ones for summer and some pashmina for winter -- and a few statement necklaces, bracelets and belts, and you're good to go. I find that my money is best spent on accessories -- a low-cost outfit can look really put together and chic with expensive accessories. I am told regularly by my coworkers and clients (including 20-somethings) that I am the hippest person they know. It is probably 50% due to my haircut which is a pretty edgy razored cut and 50% due to how I style my outfits. I'm 40, btw, and a mother of two children under 4. Also, FWIW, I am a size 4 but right after pregnancy when I was a size 12, I had the same style and bought the same basic outfits from the same stores.

Lands End SCREAMS fugly frunpy mom. Those clothes are the worst.

IN order to look good in LE, you have to be a supermodel who looks good in a paper bag.

Yikes, as the proud wearer of a pixie cut, I would like to disagree. A short cut can be very sexy and very feminine. One thing I love about it is that I can go extra-girly with my clothes or jewelry without looking over the top. Short hair can show off fabulous earrings!

And my husband, who has seen me with hair both short and long, prefers it short. The idea that short hair is mom-like and unsexy is a huge generalization. Of course, you need to keep up the haircut for it to be chic. Short hair requires very regular trims to stay looking good.

You have to be very thin and elegant looking to pull off a pixie cut. Everyone else looks like a gym teacher.

My dad loved it when my mother cut her hair short. But she is very thin and petite.

Hey, I feel the need to stick up for Land's End but only the CANVAS line and Starfish stuff. You're right, the rest is frumpadump.
