Why do Marylanders think Virginia sucks?

Anonymous
I was the guy who first posted about liberal politics and those looking down thier noses. I'm liberal but I rest my case, that is why MD trashes VA.

How does this even make sense? Taxes may be lower in VA but housing prices are definitely lower in MD. It's a trade-off.

Virginia is business friendly so it has all the real jobs and maryland has all the illegals and liberals. Virginia needs the illegals to do work but the liberals commute in for the jobs.

I love the Buy Buy Baby in that strip mall on Rockville Pike. Nit-wit.

Rockville Pike is ONE AREA- sooo much of NOVA looks like Rockville Pike it is absolutely depressing, in addition to the gnarled traffic everywhere. I also find the housing stock to be much much nicer in MD. Other than that, NOVA is fine.

ITA. And Rockville Pike is actually nicer than most of commercial strips in NoVA. There is nothing wrong with VA, iI just find too much of it ugly.

I have to disagree. I hate Rockville Pike. If I need anything from a big box, it seems I have to fight the Rockville Pike traffic and the over crowded parking lots. In VA, yes, there are many more strip malls that are spread out. Not everything is found only on Leesburg Pike. There are so many more options just to pull into a random strip mall, park, pick up what you need, and get on with the day.

So... NOVA is better than Rockville Pike because the entire region is full of strip malls and lousy traffic and you can shop for junk to your heart's content? Ok then.

Also, there is a lot of change and re-development occurring in the Rockville Pike area, so I think people should take that into account when they complain about it and compare it to we-love-our-damn-sprawl VA. In addition, why would you go shop at any of these horrible places when the internet is available?

MD has the legacy and investments made 30, 40, 50 years ago. it has much better and many more options for private school than VA because VA used to be farms and hinterlands. that era is long gone. Today, VA (FFX county) is the economic hub of the entire region. yes, if you commute to DC traffic sucks, especially bridge crossings. yes we have an idiot ideologue for a governor. real estate in similar suburbs is generally the same (Chevy Chase is to Arlington as Bethesda is to McLean as Potomac is to Great Falls) - no one can say real estate in close-in NOVA isn't profitable and the transaction costs in VA are much lower than MD.

btw, have any you marylanders actually spent time past gaithersburg? hagerstown isn't exactly the bastion of informed opinion and liberal thought and the western part of the state could be mistaken for alabama.

Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Potomac. Attached to NW DC. Many in those areas of MD and NW DC consider Mclean/North Arlington/Great Falls to be worthless trash. Based on people I've met VA does seem to have more people who purchase their upscale homes based on earned income with no inheritance or assist from familial resources. Those who came from low income to middle class families and worked hard. Went to public or low cost parochial schools. Except for pockets in Alexandria and Country Club Hills.

While the bridges do suck the longest my commute takes, in full rsh hour, is 35 minutes. It takes me twice that long to drive from bethesda. So, that's really a fallacy. As far as strip malls, if you live in old town Alexandria, like I do, sure, there are a couple on route one. It's actually pretty convenient that they are there. Old town is then completely walkable. It's its own little insular neighborhood. Also, it's way more expensive than most of md. These posts are just chock full of crazy stereotypes and generalizations. Who cares if you feel superior because you live in the other state bordering dc? It's all the burbs, fools.

Maryland has to host Fed Ex field and America still thinks they play in DC.

The Virginians using the River Road on and off exit for 495 drive the same way. River Road isn't a Parkway and there are many accidents each week right there. So, the real question is why many drivers drive like .....?

I don't get it either and i have lived here for over 20 years. Marylanders only loyalty is to being Marylanders. I am happy they can bond together on the simple statement, "Virginia sucks." A simple google Earth view of the two states will explain why I have become more of a fan; Northern Virginia doesn't have the Agricultural Preserve and Virginia doesn't understand why we don't want a second River crossing. Your overdevelopment is, respectfully, your problem.

To those of you who say Virginia is ugly: have you seen any of it outside of Fairfax/Arlington/Falls Church? This state is BEAUTIFUL! You get just 50 miles west of DC and it's rolling hills and farmland and mountains. It's really a gorgeous state.

I grew up in NC and have lived in NW DC (4 years) and MoCo (12 years); we now live in NoVa (since 2010). We made the decision to move to NoVa a few years ago based on many factors, including the quality of the schools, better fiscal management, and lower property and income taxes. I can't tell you how much flack I have gotten from friends in MoCo about Virginia being conservative and racist. But you know what? My neighborhood in Fairfax is way more diverse than my old neighborhood in Bethesda-Chevy Chase. The park we go to is like a mini-UN, whereas Norwood Park was all white. it's one thing to preach diversity from your all-white enclave, another thing to live it.

Also, it's not like Maryland outside the DC metro area is so liberal and enlightened.

I could probably count on one hand the number of people I have met here that come from someplace else that is NOT a small town or rural area. I know virtually no one who has moved here from a big city. But perhaps I don't know enough obnoxious people like the PP who would view it as offensive to be thought of as being from "a small town or worse". If I could find a decent job in a small town, that'd be the perfect place to live. ah, retirement dreams....

Really? Many people I know here came from a city - NYC, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Nashville, Atlanta, St. Louis, Minneapolis. You can debate what "big" means, but these are definitely all cities.

I'll give you that. But the Beltway in MD never seems anywhere near as bad as in VA. And 66. . .don't get me started. The mixing bowl makes me fear for my life and I would rather die than ever go to Tyson's again. Can you say nightmare?

True but the nouveau riche of VA are annoyingly arrogant about their wealth in my experience. They view everyone else who hasn't "made it" as lazy and inferior. Their sense of superiority is astounding.
