Why do Marylanders think Virginia sucks?

Anonymous
I live in Virginia, but I'm not from here. I like it a pretty good deal, so I can never understand why it is that Marylanders come on here and trash Virginia. Don't flame me! I'm not trying to start a war. I just want to understand why Marylanders hate Virginia so much because they seem pretty similar to me.

This should be good. I'm a native MD person who moved to VA. Honestly, I love NOVA more than Montgomery County. I really don't know why people in MD won't cross the bridge.

Uh, I live in MD and I think it works both ways. A lot of MD bashing from people who live in VA.

Limousine liberal communities tend to look down their noses at communities less liberal than theirs. This phenomenon is not unique to MD/VA but occurs in other parts of the country.

More conservative communities, by contrast, tend to simply ignore their liberal neighbors rather than proactively trash them.

What I really want to know is why the MD drivers who get on the Beltway @ Georgetown Pike all drive like such assholes?

My only issue with VA is the way it's not planned out physically. I feel like my MD 'hood is an extention of DC, with walkability to town, and no strip malls. Haven't found that in VA.

Born and raised in DC. Now live in MD. Always found Virginia to be racist and way too conservative.

All the damn bridges.

I agree that it seems to have to do with politics and also some fear that VA is too "southern".

I lived in DC for a while and now MD. I generally have a very good sense of direction but I find VA very difficult to navigate, particularly 395 and going south - like the airport and beyond. The signage is terrible. I always end up driving around the Pentagon and can NEVER find the Costco in Pentagon City.

Havent had the same issues going west (Falls Church and Seven Corners were always good to me).

Divided highways.

Agree with this. And everything seems older and run down compared to MD. I find it depressing somehow.

I'm OP. I swear I saw someone say this exact thing in another thread except they said it was those with Virginia plates. It was the thread where the OP said she and her coworker were arguing over whether Loudoun was really a wealthier county than Arlington. Everyone at the tail end was like "You both lose, you live in Virginia, har har!" It made me wonder where all the Virginia hate comes from! The states are miles apart, they really can't be *that* different, right?

Only the driving. And that we'd prefer you to keep to your side of the bridge and stop clogging up Tysons. Don't you have any jobs over there?

Yes they can. I live in VA (about 10 minutes from MD), kids go to school in MD and have for years. It's surprising how different they are.
