Why do Marylanders think Virginia sucks?

I could probably count on one hand the number of people I have met here that come from someplace else that is NOT a small town or rural area. I know virtually no one who has moved here from a big city. But perhaps I don't know enough obnoxious people like the PP who would view it as offensive to be thought of as being from "a small town or worse". If I could find a decent job in a small town, that'd be the perfect place to live. ah, retirement dreams....

I don't know what you are talking about. I grew up in Boston and moved here from Manhattan.

True that. Still wouldn't live there.

I don't want to live anywhere if I have to drive FIFTY miles in order to see significant green space.

Those who bash PGC probably haven't even set foot in the county. Remember: all those news reports of crimes taking place in PGC are displaced DC residents who were shoved out in the name of "gentrification".

Cause there's a lot of that in DC.

Apparently I must be spending time in the wrong parts of Maryland. When we were house hunting we could have gotten significantly more house for our money if we'd been willing to buy in someplace like Rockville or Silver Spring, but we found both areas to be pretty unappealing. The traffic was a nightmare on Georgia Ave, University Blvd, Rockville Pike, etc. In the end, we paid a premium to stay in Vienna and I'm so glad we did. Our neighborhood is beautiful, with lots of trees and green areas. The schools are fabulous and we're minutes from Metro, the W&OD trail and great shopping at Tyson's. The new HOT lanes make traveling the beltway a breeze, and I haven't seen anything in the way of traffic that's worse than what we saw in MD. Fce it folks--traffic is bad everywhere in this area. I don't know where this idea came from that it's somehow worse in VA.

Not to mention, my democratic vote actually means something here. To each his own.

MD has the legacy and investments made 30, 40, 50 years ago. it has much better and many more options for private school than VA because VA used to be farms and hinterlands. that era is long gone. Today, VA (FFX county) is the economic hub of the entire region. yes, if you commute to DC traffic sucks, especially bridge crossings. yes we have an idiot ideologue for a governor. real estate in similar suburbs is generally the same (Chevy Chase is to Arlington as Bethesda is to McLean as Potomac is to Great Falls) - no one can say real estate in close-in NOVA isn't profitable and the transaction costs in VA are much lower than MD.

btw, have any you marylanders actually spent time past gaithersburg? hagerstown isn't exactly the bastion of informed opinion and liberal thought and the western part of the state could be mistaken for alabama.

Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Potomac. Attached to NW DC. Many in those areas of MD and NW DC consider Mclean/North Arlington/Great Falls to be worthless trash. Based on people I've met VA does seem to have more people who purchase their upscale homes based on earned income with no inheritance or assist from familial resources. Those who came from low income to middle class families and worked hard. Went to public or low cost parochial schools. Except for pockets in Alexandria and Country Club Hills.

True but the nouveau riche of VA are annoyingly arrogant about their wealth in my experience. They view everyone else who hasn't "made it" as lazy and inferior. Their sense of superiority is astounding.

and the old money that is potomac and bethesda - these folks don't also thumb their noses at the rest of the working and up-and-coming? it's the same crap on either side of the river. there are equal pockets of conservatism and liberalism in the close-0in areas of MD and NOVA, which is all that we are really talking about. The rest of the states are also equally redneck, backward looking and simply don't matter. what I do give MD the nod for is that Annapolis is far better than Richmond as place to visit - though there is Williamsburg.

I'll give you that. But the Beltway in MD never seems anywhere near as bad as in VA. And 66. . .don't get me started. The mixing bowl makes me fear for my life and I would rather die than ever go to Tyson's again. Can you say nightmare?

True. My GPS system in my car is brand new and that mixing bowl dumps me in the wrong location all the time. The last time I tried to go to Tyson's, my DC ordered what we were looking on her phone after looking for a spot for over 45 minutes. She wanted to "look, feel and touch" shop. I was glad to get out of there. It is easier to find parking in Manhattan.

Tysons is an absolute nightmare. I agree with the poster who said they refuse to shop there. Who designed the roads around tysons ?! Poor planning.

Just because something is geographically south of you does not mean it is "the south." In that case, is Mexico "the south"? How can you really think Pennsylvania is the South?
