Why, Northwest is as good if not better than QO.

Um, no

Wootton may be losing its direction a little. Currently, some students are being forced to stand during tests due to the lack of desks and to spread students out to prevent cheating.

DP... I guess to you athletics is way more important than academics.

Look up a picture of Quince Orchard Red Army, it will show you how much school spirit there really is. The white percentage at both schools is very similar, though the minority groups differ. QO is about equally divided with the minority groups between Hispanic, black, and Asian. Wooton is mainly all Asian minorities. I have heard a lot from my friends who have kids at Wooton about how stressful it is because everyone is trying to be the best. It seems like it is extremely competitive. QO is an extremely well-rounded school. The only negative thing I've heard about QO are multiple racist incidents like swastikas spray painted on the football field and found on desks and in bathrooms. I also hear a lot about how the stereotypes of people are true at QO, and people seem to judge people because of that. Of course, your kid could stay away from that.

So stupid to rehash a thread from several years ago. Are you just trolling crap looking to stir the pot?

That is just nonsense.

I didn’t go to HS in the area but I heard bad things about the “W” schools. As in, they would prefer to expel low performing kids than help them. A friend of mine told me that he was nearly expelled from Wootoon because he didn’t do well enough. He transferred to QO and they gave him additional assistance and he managed to go from failing at Wootoon (and nearly expelled) to an A/B student at QO. I see no reason to believe he’s lying, he is a trustworthy friend. That said, things could have changed since then.

QO kids are great kids. The higher averages you see are because The Wooton population has more monied families.

Here is a perfect example of what you will deal with at Wooton. A smug know it all that understood the point but has to be an a$$ about it.

Actually I didn't understand the point either. I assumed that "But Wootton makes it more shameful to not be in the top 95% and kids feel stupid when they are not. " meant that kids feel stupid and ashamed if they are not in the 95th percentile or above. But that doesn't really make sense. The 95th percentile of what? The country? MCPS? Wootton? Statistically, of course, 94% of students at Wootton will be below the 95th percentile of students at Wootton, no matter how high-achieving the Wootton student body is. Do 94% of students at Wootton feel stupid and ashamed?

Here is the correction. If you are not graduating in the top 5% at Wooton you are made to feel stupid and ashamed.

The 95th percentile of what? The country? MCPS? Wootton?

Yes. It is a fictional number. That is the point. Kids are competitive and they don't care if it is true they are brats about it. They are that bratty kid you went to school with that always asked you what you got on the test, what your SAT score was, did you pass the AP test, etc. Then they are HAPPY if you didn't because that just makes them feel a little better about themselves.

All those kids that reminded the teacher that he forgot to assign homework on the weekend all together in one place. I know sounds like fun. (Not everybody but that is the general vibe.)

At Wootton: Hey what did you get on the AP Calculus test? Oh a B (smile). Oh sorry I hope you don't get grounded. (smile)
At QO: Hey what did you get on the AP Calculus test? (this is in theory because most likely your friends at QO just don't care) Oh a B (smile). Nice job. (smile)

I think most kids can rise above that bratty kid but if you have a kid that you don't think will rise above you should know. Wootton is a great school with a character flaw, just like most schools in Montgomery County (or the world).

QO's character flaw is they have athletic kids and poor kids. So you figure out if you can deal with that.

This is not a flaw.

Maybe QO has lower standard?

No the friend has some issues that Montgomery County schools are usually really good at dealing with but it seems like Wootoon was more concerned with test scores and reputation than helping kids that need a little extra assistance. My friend certainly isn’t the only one I’ve heard this from either. Perhaps you’re fortunate enough to not have to deal with these situations.

Wootton's high school football coach was having weird conferences with his 'preferred' recruited players - i.e.: things like marijuana as a reward?
Recruited athletes rent houses in boundary and play for that team - pretty ridiculous for high school sports.

Only thing more absurd is they fired that coach and he went to the tiny 'always broke' Avalon school, which somehow found scholarships for those athletes (hmmm - my guess is they sucked the funds out of their sister school, Brookewood. The girls don't need a music, science or art program- nahhhhh! Just take them on nature walks - done!).

I've taught at both Wootton and QO. Both are fine. Teaching will be the same. A bit more economic diversity and more low achievers at QO but the solid student types find each other. Wootton had more pressure cooker parents. College outplacement was the same when comparing similar kids.

Not sure what brought this thread back to life, but Wootton parent here - one graduated and two more there now. Awesome school for academics, athletics, service, college prep, social environment, etc. Completely pleased with every aspect.

Those of you who have "heard" this or that have no idea what you are talking about. Firsthand experiences or it never happened.

I'm sure your kids' experiences were fine, and the school works for your kids, but not all kids have great experiences there. It is a pressure cooker, and not all kids and parents want that.
