Actually I didn't understand the point either. I assumed that "But Wootton makes it more shameful to not be in the top 95% and kids feel stupid when they are not. " meant that kids feel stupid and ashamed if they are not in the 95th percentile or above. But that doesn't really make sense. The 95th percentile of what? The country? MCPS? Wootton? Statistically, of course, 94% of students at Wootton will be below the 95th percentile of students at Wootton, no matter how high-achieving the Wootton student body is. Do 94% of students at Wootton feel stupid and ashamed?[/quote]

Here is the correction. If you are not graduating in the top 5% at Wooton you are made to feel stupid and ashamed.

Yes. It is a fictional number. That is the point. Kids are competitive and they don't care if it is true they are brats about it. They are that bratty kid you went to school with that always asked you what you got on the test, what your SAT score was, did you pass the AP test, etc. Then they are HAPPY if you didn't because that just makes them feel a little better about themselves.

All those kids that reminded the teacher that he forgot to assign homework on the weekend all together in one place.  I know sounds like fun. (Not everybody but that is the general vibe.)

At Wootton: Hey what did you get on the AP Calculus test? Oh a B (smile). Oh sorry I hope you don't get grounded. (smile)
At QO: Hey what did you get on the AP Calculus test? (this is in theory because most likely your friends at QO just don't care) Oh a B (smile). Nice job. (smile)

I think most kids can rise above that bratty kid but if you have a kid that you don't think will rise above you should know. Wootton is a great school with a character flaw, just like most schools in Montgomery County (or the world).
