Try to top my MIL story

When I was pregnant with my first, feeling huge, my FIL told me, with my tiny MIL smirking away next to him, that my MIL weighed the same when she left the hospital after having my DH as she did before she got pregnant. My MIL is a non-eater and a meal skipper and weighs about 100 lbs. I think legally she should be in a booster seat when she rides in a car.

They continue to tell me this same story EVERY TIME WE SEE THEM (2x/year). And, they always, always pull this when my husband elsewhere. This past summer they did it while we were eating in a restaurant and my DH had gone to the bathroom. Every time we're with them, even though/because I know its coming, I dread the moment. When my FIL delivers his line, I am amazed all over again that they did it again. I would be eternally grateful for a rejoinder that would put a stop to it, yet not blow up our relationship.

Actually they have a number of self-serving stories they tell over and over again, but this one bothers me the most for some reason. We go to the beach with them each summer, and hanging out on the beach with them is a misery since they like to sit there and discuss and analyze any overweight people/families they see. For this reason I now wear a bathing suit with a skirt halfway to my knees, otherwise I fear my MIL would get out binoculars to check my ass for cellulite.

Why not beat him to the punch? You know the story is coming, so say something like, "MIL, you look great. Of course, I'd expect nothing less from the lady who left the hospital weighing her pre-pregnancy amount!"

This is the best DCUM thread. Thanks for cheering me up! My DH's mom died long before we met, so I do not have the pleasure/pain of a MIL.

Every time they tell this story, next time your DH is present, I would ask them to share it with him. Preface that by telling DH that he's missed their re-telling of a favorite story, and then tell FIL to tell it again. I wouldn't be fake cheery or even the reverse - just speak in a neutral, conversational tone. Do that a few times and see if that changes things.

Agreed. As funny as this thread as, everytime someone claims to have the worst MIL I think of the grandmother who threw her 2yo granddaughter of a third story parking structure bridge at Tyson's this summer. Pretty sure that Dad wins the worst MIL prize.

Sorry, I'm still LMFAO about the pacifier smotherer situation.

That is just beyond words!!!

The NICU sneak was pretty hilarious too.

Grandma Kray-kray!

Ummmmmm, yeah, I can top that.

My MIL is completely absent from my child's life. My child only knows her by photos and every now and then hearing her voice over the phone.

How dare your MIL try to do something for you or your child!

Oh STFU above poster

I absolutely love this thread. OMG - a LC MIL sounds dreadful - two of the most annyoing categories of people - combined!

The weight story is dreadul - MIL weighing prepreg weight when leaving the hospital. My sister's standard response to annoying bragging intended to put you down is to day, "that must have been so nice for you."

I heard about a MIL who went ahead and pierced a baby's ears without permission from the parents.

Hands down, the worst MIL in the world is Carmela del Rosa, who you can read about in the news right now. She was angry that her daughter got pregnant young and out of wedlock, and she hated the man who fathered the child, so she threw the baby off a pedestrian bridge and killed it. In court, she complained that she felt the baby had caused a rift between her and her daughter.

They came out to "help" with number 2, and gave us a bill for $2,000 for their services and food they bought while staying with us (incidentally, they changed their 2 week visit to a 6 week visit without asking so they could get a better deal on plane tickets). DH negotiated them down to $500.

While they were visiting, DH asked them to watch the kids while he went to work and I went to an emergency doctor's appointment (I was having some severe issues). They asked me to make it fast so they could get to a yoga class.

MIL also gave my SIL's kid her first hair cut without asking. So I hid the scissors when they came to visit us.

To be fair, my own mother is a piece of work too, especially around newborns. Perhaps this is why we live on opposite sides of the country as our families.

Exuse me??? A bill for helping out and food? This really bothers me.
The nerve...
