You can speculate that the dog was let out of the yard on purpose, but this may or may not be so.

The shelter is completely within its rights to treat this as an at-large situation, and to charge you. They have provided you with a SERVICE, after all.

If I were you, I'd be racing there with money in hand, anxious to see my dog again and relieved to get her back. I cannot understand your reaction AT ALL.

Your inability to understand does not make my irritation and frustration less valid.

I think the "at-large" citation is complete BS and a way for them to get some money out of me. If they called it a fee for homing him, sure, but "at-large"? AND they didn't find him outdoors. Someone brought him in....so that makes their citation even more slimy and money-grubbing.

This fine is how they deter people from being careless with their dogs. Bet you aren't going to let this happen again.

OP I hear ya! Those shelters are ridiculous.

It's not always people that are careless. We had the gas company come into our yard and leave our gate completely uunlocked and open (way open). I let our dogs out and of course they ran off.

Then some inconsiderate neighbor called the pound instead of posting on our neighborhood listserve (like EVERY does when their cat, dog, etc go missing). I was out looking for the dog when they tried calling my house. No answer, so they took them both out to the FFX Cty shelter. After we finally found out where they were they told us we couldn't come and get them right away (can't remember exactly why - it was Sunday maybe and that 'part' of the shelter wasn't open then). My DH had to take off time from work the next weekday morning to go bail them out of jail.

DH basically told them and me that if it happens again they can KEEP th dogs. He's not as fond of them as I am ;-(

I'd already copped a bit of an attitude on the phone with the Officer and don't know what his authority was re: arrest, disorderly conduct, etc.

1. You'd copped an attitude? I'm shocked.

2. You were worried that the "Officer" - in other words, the kid working the phones at the shelter - could arrest you? OK. Are you also worried that your mail carrier can authorize an air strike on your house?

Bitch...give it a rest. The OP probably already has her dog now.

Um... They need to get money. Your dog got loose, and while it might not have been your fault per-se, you were obviously not paying attention to it outside, so I think it is fair that you have to pay the shelter for their time.

OP is your dog still stuck at the shelter bc you would not pay?

Uhm, yeah, when*their* pets go missing. Not when some random dogs are roaming around. Did you expect them to get the dogs, keep them, and then post on the listserv on the off chance that they belong to someone who reads that?

Normal people call Animal Control when there are animals roaming around, regardless.

Anonymous wrote:So pissed right now. My dog somehow got out of my backyard. It has a lock, so I'm thinking some neighborhood kids did it. This was Sunday....found him today on county's website. Called...they want $200 to get him back. WTF.....I said "Well, what if I don't have $200". The response was that the dog would be 1)put up for adoption, 2) put in a foster home or 3) "humanely euthanized". WTF kind of "animal protection" agency would KILL a dog rather than give it back to its rightful owner.

Yes, I know my dog got out and the county was just "doing their job". But wouldn't an agency that is all about animal protection be glad that the owners were found and charge them for the cost to house/feed the dog for the days in their care?? WTF should I have to pay a "dog at large" citation if someone intentionally let my dog out!!

I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooo pissed right now!!! Didn't even go pick him up today because I'm so mad, I'd probably go to jail for assault!

I was in the SAME situation MAN!! My uncle's dog got lost and it wasn't my fault but I was worried so I called shelters. They guy said I had to pay... I think $60.00 and they would bring here to our house. They said if I didn't pay it they'de kill her. My uncle wasn't looking so we paid it we didn't want to see her die. I had to hear the guy's mouth run about how expensive it was to buy her food and blah blah and felt like yelling shut the BLEEP up!!! I know how you feel MAN!!!!! ITS YOUR DOGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE STEALING YOUR DOG THEY DON'T HAVE A RIGHT TO CHARGE YOU!!! but you may need to pay or they're going to kill it, NOT put it up for adoption thats a LIE.

it costs money for them to round up loose dogs, cage them, feed them, etc.

Um, yeah, THEY DO! In MY neighborhood many people post on the listserve that they've seen a cat or dog (with description) on such and such street or that they have a dog or cat in their backyard. Typically the animals are found within blocks of their houses and someone will recognize it as their neighbors pet or the homeowner will see it. Also, I didn't state it but I had posted on the listserve about my missing dogs. Hope you don't move to my neighborhood where MOST of the people are super friendly.

OP, I would be angry as well in your situation. All these posters are overly berating you and foaming at the mouth like you killed someone, damn.

The OP was and is an asshole and this thread is MONTHS OLD. Leave it alone now.

I leave my dog in my backyard every day. No rules here about leaving a dog in a yard. I'm always home, and I always check on him, but it's crazy to not be able to leave your dog in your own yard!

BTW, my dog has gotten out many, many times. He's an escape artist! He dug under the fence a few times, he's broken through the fence a few times, he's pushed open the gate when someone left it half-latched, he's gotten out when a worker whom I specifically told to close the gate left it open.

Every time he's gotten out, a neighbor has called me and told me where he is. Some people have taken him into their houses, and left him in their yards to play with their children. He's a very friendly dog.

Were he found by a pound, I would be so relieved, I would rush over there and pay the fee, whatever it is. The fee the pound/animal shelter is charging is excessive, but I love my dog so much, I'd pay double that to get him back.

I'm wondering how much you really care about your dog, OP. Bye.

All of you ignorant people suck balls. Seriously, the dog got lost. Now the state "wants $200 or you'll never see your dog again". Some people have families to feed and don't have the luxury of credit cards. Yeah, for my dog, I would do all that I could if I could PHYSICALLY get the cash, but guess what? Some of us don't wipe our asses with $20's, and have to spend our money on things like feeding our babies. You ignorant pukes, no matter how you've berated this person, it's still just a dog. Go take your hateful judgmental attitudes and go join Westboro. Fuck.
