I Officially Hate Animal Shelters!!!

So pissed right now. My dog somehow got out of my backyard. It has a lock, so I'm thinking some neighborhood kids did it. This was Sunday....found him today on county's website. Called...they want $200 to get him back. WTF.....I said "Well, what if I don't have $200". The response was that the dog would be 1)put up for adoption, 2) put in a foster home or 3) "humanely euthanized". WTF kind of "animal protection" agency would KILL a dog rather than give it back to its rightful owner.

Yes, I know my dog got out and the county was just "doing their job". But wouldn't an agency that is all about animal protection be glad that the owners were found and charge them for the cost to house/feed the dog for the days in their care?? WTF should I have to pay a "dog at large" citation if someone intentionally let my dog out!!

I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooo pissed right now!!! Didn't even go pick him up today because I'm so mad, I'd probably go to jail for assault!

In this area, they actively try and discourage people from keeping pets outside except when leashed and under your control. I have lived in this area for years and 3 HOAs have all had rules pertaining to leaving a dog in a fenced backyard (no more than 30 minutes at a time, no dog houses allowed, et).

To be honest, if my dog got out like the way yours did, I would be frantic and would have been so relieved to hand over Visa or MC to the shelter to get my dog back so I can't relate to your upset.

That really (really) sucks OP. But, animal shelters are always having to beg for money and run on a shoe-string budget. Perhaps you can think of it as a contribution to the well-being of the animals in your community? That might help take the sting out at least a little.

OP, neighbors suck. Pay the money for the dog, and put a lock on your fence. Use cameras in and around your home if you have to. Catch them in the act. Be the first to call the county (or preferably, higher) next time they are remotely close to a wrong. Make them sorry they started with you, seriously. Have fun. GL.

Op - I understand your frustration at your neighbors. However, it is cruel to leave your animal in the shelter another day. Have you been to one and heard how loud it is in there? $200 is a lot, but please think about your poor animal and go and get them.

OP animal shelters do TON of wonderful things for stray animals and the community with very little funding if any. Get the hell off your cheap ass horse and pay it. They f

OP here. They actually didn't find my dog. They said he was brought in (perhaps by the parents if some kids stole my dog!).

Your dog should not have been outdoors unsupervised.

You can speculate that the dog was let out of the yard on purpose, but this may or may not be so.

The shelter is completely within its rights to treat this as an at-large situation, and to charge you. They have provided you with a SERVICE, after all.

If I were you, I'd be racing there with money in hand, anxious to see my dog again and relieved to get her back. I cannot understand your reaction AT ALL.

OP here. So this is how they make their money....bleeding grieving owners of stolen/lost pets dry? That's just not right.

I'm not being cheap, but I think it's absurd that they're charging me the same amount as a pet adoption. What about the pet owners that don't have $200 to spare within the limited timeframe they give you to recover? Is it honestly fair that they would rather kill your dog? I find nothing "wonderful" about an agency that values money over the wellbeing of animals.

Fine. They still posted the pic or notification about your dog being found. That is a service. You sound like a spoiled brat. I also do not understand your reaction and the only sympathy I have is for your dog.

You do not deserve a dog. You are a cold hearted entitled wench.

Your inability to understand does not make my irritation and frustration less valid.

I think the "at-large" citation is complete BS and a way for them to get some money out of me. If they called it a fee for homing him, sure, but "at-large"? AND they didn't find him outdoors. Someone brought him in....so that makes their citation even more slimy and money-grubbing.

Well OP you are certainly not referring to yourself with that description. You are clearly not to concerned as you aren't even willing to go get your dog.
