OP here. They actually didn't find my dog. They said he was brought in (perhaps by the parents if some kids stole my dog!).

Fine. They still posted the pic or notification about your dog being found. That is a service. You sound like a spoiled brat. I also do not understand your reaction and the only sympathy I have is for your dog.

They actually didn't have him under "found". He was listed under their adoptable pets.

Your response is completely juvenile; feel free not to return to this thread.

OP here. So this is how they make their money....bleeding grieving owners of stolen/lost pets dry? That's just not right.

Get the hell off your cheap ass horse and pay it. They

I'm not being cheap, but I think it's absurd that they're charging me the same amount as a pet adoption. What about the pet owners that don't have $200 to spare within the limited timeframe they give you to recover? Is it honestly fair that they would rather kill your dog? I find nothing "wonderful" about an agency that values money over the wellbeing of animals.

Don't be ridiculous. You are being cheap. Of course you are being cheap.

They have provided you with a SERVICE.

I cannot believe you are posting about this and not racing to go pick up your poor dog.

I hope they give your dog to someone who can support a great NON PROFIT org such as an animal shelter. You obviously are one nasty woman.

Lock the gate and/or get a web cam.

Well OP you are certainly not referring to yourself with that description. You are clearly not to concerned as you aren't even willing to go get your dog.

Shelter closed at 6PM. I left a message that morning when I found him...never heard back. Finally got home after earthquake mess at 5:30PM. By the time I talked to someone about him it was 5:45PM. I could have *possibly* made it, but I was so mad that I figured it was best to wait until the morning when I'd cooled off instead of charging in there. I know he's safe so that lessened my anxiety a bit.

You can speculate that the dog was let out of the yard on purpose, but this may or may not be so.

The shelter is completely within its rights to treat this as an at-large situation, and to charge you. They have provided you with a SERVICE, after all.

If I were you, I'd be racing there with money in hand, anxious to see my dog again and relieved to get her back. I cannot understand your reaction AT ALL.

Your inability to understand does not make my irritation and frustration less valid.

I think the "at-large" citation is complete BS and a way for them to get some money out of me. If they called it a fee for homing him, sure, but "at-large"? AND they didn't find him outdoors. Someone brought him in....so that makes their citation even more slimy and money-grubbing.

Of COURSE someone (some GOOD person who went OUT OF THEIR WAY) took him in. The shelter doesn't drive around looking for lost pets.

How do you define "at large" if this isn't it?

And WHY are you posting here instead of going to get your poor dog? In your shoes I couldn't bear to leave him there for another moment.

Admit it OP, you hate your dog and left it outside to die.

No, I mean the kids may have stole the dog hoping to keep it. And the parents instead took it to the shelter. There are teens in my area and my dog is very friendly.

As a pet owner, I cannot fathom this.

OP, you are a piece of work. I feel sorry for your dog.

And you still are too stupid to get that they provided a service? You don't think that by taking in your dog in general was not s service? They took in your dog to help an animal. Damn you are a nasty bitch OP. Karma sucks... Get ready!

at large: at large(p): having escaped, especially from confinement; "a convict still at large"; "searching for two escaped prisoners"; "dogs loose on the streets"; "criminals on the loose in the neighborhood".

At-large would seem to indicate that they found the animal roaming around.

The shelter closed at 6PM.

OP, calm down.

You have a legitimate gripe over their semantics.
You may even have a legitimate gripe over their overpopulation rule that gives you only a few days to fork over the filthy lucre.

But the fact is, they exist and were there to shelter your pet when it could have wandered off and be run over.
In that spirit, consider it a donation to a worthy but needy cause.

Or it's possible the teens felt bad that your dog was outdoors by itself and let the dog out. The dog may have also been barking so much they couldn't stand it. Or who knows maybe they just took the dog over to the shelter to get it away from you....

OP here. I don't know about you, but when I'm REALLY pissed off, I try to give myself some time to cool off before I do something irrational. Exactly what would I have accomplished going up in there 5 minutes before closing (if I even made it) screaming the place down because I didn't agree with their policies? And trust me, I would've gone in there PISSED. I would have solved nothing and they may have just decided not to release my dog to me that day anyway. Is it not better to handle things with a cool head? I know my dog is safe and now that I've called and they know he has an owner, he is free from the possibility of adoption, euthanasia, etc.

I can't stand people who make "I feel sorry for your dog" comments. It's so elementary and a completely overblown claim.
