devastating. is the woman's surviving husband really suing this family? this is unconscionable to me.

No, it's the families of the men who died in the SUV.

"And FWIW 1055 and 1101: I'm not racist. Thanks for the reverse discrimination attempt though!"

No one said you were racist. I said that I think race is playing a role in how people are responding. And how were you discriminated against exactly?

There was clearly so much going on there that nobody knew about and the fact that she had 5 small children in the car with her is very difficult to process.

I wondered if her abcess caused encephalitis which precipitated the drinking and pot smoking.

I watched the doc. Then did the same thing obsessed over it, I don't get how she could have been a closet drunk n still kept her job where she made 100,000 a yr, n how not one person even suspected she was drinking, I think her tooth had something to do with it, I wish I never watched the damn thing cause now I can't stop wondering what happened n how that could happen, I have 2 kids n people r always tellng my husband I'm a super mom n wife, how did he not. Know she had a drinking problem, or he did know nd was in denial, it seemed like he had it pretty easy, the wife made all the money n did everything, I think the husband never asked questions cause it was so easy for him to look the other way, I would know if my husband had any problems, its called a good marriage. This really was a crazy story.

Bingo. What a weird marriage. It's like the husband was incidental.

I watched it too tonight and don't understand all the confusion.

thoughts:

husband admitted Diane smoked pot.

husband admitted they drank vodka.

Diane stopped along the way for some pain medication, but they didn't have it so she rushed out.

early in the trip, before she was wasted presumably, she was behind another car driving aggressively and honking.

her best friend admitted she was very hard to deal with and was angry and aggressive.

I just had an overall very negative reaction to her, even notwithstanding the fact that her being drunk and stoned killed 8 people.

Actually the surviving husband IS suing the father of the dead nieces.
The mother of the dead girls is suing the estate of her dead SIL.
Everyone else is suing them both.

and I'll say it again -- it's a weird marriage and the doofus husband is incidental because she was a closeted lesbian. I'm pretty sure that doesn't have anything to do with a suicide mission blotto car accident, though. But perhaps they're related, unconsciously

she was so not my type of person. loud, obnoxious, pot-head, fat, new-yorker. but I don't think she was a lesbian.

I know this thread is almost done but I watched it the other night and here are my thoughts.

The documentary initially made me believe it was going to paint Diane as the devoted worker, wife, and mother. But if left me thinking this woman had deep demons that she did not want people to know about, and for some reason, everyone just left her alone about them. Her best friend said Diane never opened up about her marriage and/ or mom. But she did know why the mom left but would not disclose on camera.

I truly think the husband and Aunt Jay are living in a complete denial about the situation...why? I dont know. It was very interesting that they painted the picture of the PI taking their money and never contacting them again. I had to wonder...why no follow up, why not sure him, why not knock down his office door? Then when the PI calls Jay back, you can tell they lied about it all. He ran the tests again, they came back the same way. It was not the results the husband and Jay wanted so they concocted the story about eh PI taking the money and running. But in reality he did his job, case closed.

The husband admitted to Diane smoking pot at night and they drank. So how come he is in utter disbelief about her having these in her system at the time of her death? Was he wasted on his way home too but he thought she was ok so she took the kids and he drove seperate? There is something not right with this man. I dont know if he is lying and why but it does not add up. You would think he would just leave it alone and try to move on instead of trying to prove something wrong that has conclusive toxicology evidence.

I dont know if Diane was a closet alcholic. Its certainly possible. I do think she had some sort of psychotic break in the car that day. Dont know why, maybe it was onset by tooth pain who knows? But she lost it for some reason and killed 8 people. Its a tragedy that could have been avoided.

For me, the documentary certainly left me with unasnwered questions, but one thing I dont doubt was that she was high and drunk when she killed those people.

interesting. instead of "psychotic" breakdown in the car, I think she just got progressively more and more drunk and stoned until she was in a state of delirium. is that possible? or maybe just drunk/stoned where she essentially passed out. So I doubt she was an alcoholic, because I think then she would have handled her liquor better or known how much to drink. Driving those last few miles down the ramp and then into oncoming traffic was amazing. The poor kids must have been in terror in the back seat. Suicide seems unlikely. She must have stopped somewhere to drink out of the vodka, or at least to smoke the pot, so she was not drunk/stoned when they left.

also, to add - the mother of the three girls is pregnant. so that is a nice footnote.

I didn't realize Long Island was so trashy. So funny they picked that clown Dominic Barbara as their lawyer. He made his name on the Howard Stern show after representing some of the parties in the Joey Botafuco case....

The one thing that never comes up - either in the documentary or other news articles - is life insurance. Perhaps the husband and SIL have to clear her name in order to obtain a payout on an insurance policy? Sometimes a company won't pay if the decedent was grossly negligent or committed suicide. Nobody ever talks about that. Besides clearing her name for their son (which is somewhat worthless because he'll eventually uncover the truth about his mom in that van and hate everyone for not being honest with him), the only other reason I can think of for their vehement denial is: $$$$$$.
