Um, I really hope you would also never get into a car WITHOUT children after throwing back a few. While your children may be safe if you drink and drive without them, mine may not be when you plow into my car.

I also thought it was interesting that no one in her life really knew her. Her closest friends and co-workers only seemed to know surface-y things about her. Her husband said she never talked about her own mother leaving when she was 9. He didn't even know the story, but they were together for 13 years. Does anyone think she may have been trying to pull a Susan Smith with the kids in the car? I thought of this when the witnesses said she had a determined look on her face as she was rocketing down the freeway. It's just all so sad. Truly gripping tale and very well done.

I'm glad to hear the mother of the three kids is expecting again. It's interesting that they (the Hances) didn't want to be part of the documentary at all, no?

The husband is suing them, because it was their minivan she was driving.

And I wonder how in the hell he really things the mini van of all things contributed to the accident. Ihave to think that he is completely insane and just placing blame now on anything other than his deceased wife.

You and the PP are rolling your eyes at the suggestion that people shouldn't drink and drive even without kids in the car? Do people really still think this is okay? Would this story be any less tragic if the 8 kids that were killed had been in a different car? Or, for that matter, if an innocent adult in another car had been killed? I'm going to guess you never lost anyone to a drunk driver.

Oh Beavis, you cracked the case! Are you serious with this shit? I'm rolling my eyes at the vapid "While your children may be safe if you drink and drive without them, mine may not be when you plow into my car."

Still makes no sense. His wife was drunk and high. Even if her behavior was precipitated by a medical incident, she was still drunk and high. He couldn't possibly have a case, could he?

Oh brother. I'm the original pp, that doesn't drink with my kids in the car. I guess I set myself up for this criticism for not being more specific (even tho we were specifically talking about drinking with kids in the car, but whatever).

SO, for those of you worrying:

I don't drink and drive with children in the car.
I don't drink and drive with pets in the car.
I don't drink and drive with the elderly in the car.
I don't drink and drive with Kardashians in the car.
I don't drink and drive with parakeets in the car (should be covered under pets but I don't want to be accused of driving drunk with birds)
I don't drink and drive.

Oh, and before anyone accuses me, I don't get high and go rollerblading.

I've read some articles about that crash and there is a lot of theories out there about what actually happened, but it looks like neither family is telling the complete truth. BIL didn't call 911 right away, after talking to his sister and realizing she wasn't quite all there, he told her to pull over, which she didn't. Is it possible BIL knew of her substance abuse problem and didn't want to call the cops on her? SIL dialed 911, but by that time everyone was already dead. Maybe, if the police were called right away, the story could have ended differently.

And I'm rolling my eyes, because you read WAY too far into the PP's comment. I seriously doubt the PP was advocating drinking and driving, whether driving with kids or alone. Your reply was hysterical.

But are you high right now? 'Cuz you are really funny!

you sure read a lot into it... not my take at all from what I saw, a horrific situation but "murderer" is way beyond what any of the evidence or forensic psychiatric profile supports ... if anything it was the family deflecting blame; the more knowledgeable experts clearly laid out the facts of an probably unintentional, but devastatingly horrific situation with the basis in who-knows-what facts.

You seem awfully judgmental given all the unknowables that were clearly laid out ... it's OK to be appalled and horrified ... less so to jump to a conclusion like "murderer" (which requires intent).

What unknowables?

Um, did you even watch the program? The forensic psychiatrist clearly stated that there are various factors which are not known and will never be known re what may have actually happened and contributed to the horrible event... many or any of which could bear on concluding that someone is a "murderer" as opposed to otherwise responsible for deaths but not in a criminally culpable way that requires intent.

The alcohol and drugs in her system alone cancel out the "unknowables". What we do know is that she was drunk and high. Heart attacks, seizures, strokes, etc, would have shown up in an autopsy. Also, the program was slanted towards Diane and her husband, not the family who lost three children. I don't believe for a second they weren't spinning it in Diane's favor for a reason - to make Diane look like she may not have been at fault. I'm sure another forensic psychiatrist (BTW - forensic psychiatric? really? they can evaluate her from beyond the dead? OF COURSE THERE ARE UNKNOWNS, she is dead!) could easily slant it in the other family's favor.

You are silly to assume everything to see on HBO is fact.

EIGHT people are dead, there are no winners in this story. I have empathy for the husband and son who are trying to piece together their lives knowing that the closest person to them in the word caused so much heart ache and destroyed families - as they are searching for answers. I have empathy for the the brother and SIL that lost their inocent daughers, nephew and sister- whom they loved and trustest with all of their hearts. I feel empathy for the families of the other three men that were killed in the SUV. This story has left only saddness and unconsolable grief.

I have had family members with substance abuse problems, I have close friends and family that had their lives ended too soon do to other peoples actions or inactions; but sometimes life deals you a really shitty hand and there is NOTHING you can do about it.

Hug your kids, love your spouse and forgive your enemies; you had today, others did not.
