Private & Independent Schools
| Now is this because of concern with justice you're saying this or because of the misuse of power? |
I'm not sure I know what you mean. Is it a question of whether it should be a story covered in Metro (the crime/justice angle) or the front page (the suppression of the story/misuse of power angle)? |

This is not to take away from an investigation, but while we are all waiting for the results, I wonder if there are other lurid stories we should air about some of the same parents reading this board. Wrapped in anonymity of course. I know a ton of them.
You have the details as they are known. Why not let an investigation take place before you ruin a life? |
Not one of the many, many posts on this thread has named the teacher under investigation. I would imagine not wanting to "ruin a life" has played some role in refraining from doing so. I am not as confident as you that a thorough investigation is actually taking place, or that the school or anyone else would share with us the results of that investigation. After all, if it is true that the school or those close to the school or a conspiracy between the two have been able to keep the story from the press, that would seem to suggest they want this thing to simmer down and die a natural death during the summer months, just in time for those scores of applications to start rolling in come September. Now, I hear you on the lurid stories point. I'm afraid though that I'm honest enough with myself to cast no stones . . . . |

It is such a sad situation. The school is such a great place, but I fear it will be tainted with this for a long time.
The rumors are flying and I heard today that there were more pictures. |
Were the pictures of students? This is why I can't sleep at night. We're a Beauvoir family. While our child was not in his class, it is possible that our child had contact with this teacher. But we don't know his name for sure. And I'm not sure I can speak to my child in an intelligent way at this point to hone in on this. I love the school. I love Paula. I love everything Beauvoir stands for. But I'm wondering now whether they shouldn't be providing us with more details, like the name of the teacher, and perhaps some professional guidance if not outright law enforcement guidance to make sure that our child was not himself victimized. |

21:24 -- Have you spoken to the school about your concerns, which I think are appropriate and you outlined very well. Did they not offer a contact for parents to call if they are concerned that their child might have been victimized? Do they not have a counselor on staff to assist? I was amazed at your post to think that Beauvoir families are being left in the dark!
I believe this can, unfortunately happen anywhere and we are kidding ourselves if we think otherwise. But there are things to do (both school and parent) to help prevent it as much as possible. And a school's ability to deal with this terrible type of event is extremely telling. |
| I am not that poster but yes, the school listed a number of people to contact. |
Well, the list seemed to contain half of the school's administration. I'm not sure if this was meant to provide us with more options, to spread out the anticipated flurry of calls, or is the result of any one person's desire to become the focal point. If I were your lawyer or PR person, I'd have designated one or two people to be the principal point of contact. |
Yes, in a school full of parents who I know are high powered lawyers, with a wide range of experience, from federal prosecutors to criminal defense, from civil plaintiffs' lawyers to corporate defenders, I am surprised that they did not do a better job of a more timely and complete (i.e., name names) disclosure. And the politicos among the parents should have insisted on a Town Hall Meeting. And the press folks (particularly the Wash. Post mafia) among the parents should have insisted on a Press Release. And the doctors among the parents should have insisted on some type of grief counselor. Perhaps the problem is that the school never reached out to the parents for their input? You have a wealth of experience and wisdom to tap into Beauvoir. Fair or unfair, you'll be judged for some time not so much on your academic prowess, culture of nurturing, or exmissions, all quite considerable, but on your handling of this crisis. I wouldn't say you've received failing marks so far, but you can do better! |

This thread is somewhat disturbing. I get the feel that many posters are equally or more worried about the reputation of the school than the actual situation and whether children were harmed. Perhaps these posts are from school employees asked to do so. If this is the case, it is truly disappointing and a risky violation of trust. I went to a top boarding school so I understand the protect your community aspect but at the same time some things do cross the line.
Specific facts in the situation could be very useful for parents who want to work with Beauvoir or their school to put more protections in place. Sure there is no way to ever prevent something from happening but there are many safeguards that could be put in place that many schools, Beauvoir included, may want to re-prioritize. Understanding the facts helps identify future courses of action. This information should not only be shared with parents but parents should play a role in the safeguards. |

PP, I also find this thread a little disturbing but for another reason. Am I the only person here who thinks that some of these parents might be overreacting a bit? We don't know (at least no one has said) that the photos were of a Beauvoir student. We don't know that any harm -- physical or psychological -- was done to any child. I guess I get concerned that kids will sense this apparent panic and react more to that than the situation at hand.
I know that parents who are spending $30K for a school year expect to be buying a preventative bubble for their kids (among other things). I get the sense that some people's dream of the place has been shattered and that's what some are most upset about. As other PPs have said: this could happen at any school. Even Beauvoir. What's important now is how this is handled, both by parents and the adminstration. Sleepness nights produce nothing. I suggest that some of these PPs calm themselves down, at least until more facts are known. |

Hopefully no harm was done to any child. That would be a relief indeed. But that doesn't make the point mute. The point is that regardless of what policies may or may not have been in place, a situation was created where harm could have been done to a child. And what's to prevent this (or something more agregious) from happening. A near miss (if that's what it was) doesn't make the situation okay or not worth reacting to. The fact that the teacher's contract was not renewed suggests that the school felt it was something worth reacting to. Parents are absolutely not overreacting.
Regarding calming down until the facts are known, I doubt that the facts will be known (or at least not willingly disclosed by Beauvoir). |
| meant egregious not agregious |
| One of the rumors flying around is that the teacher in question has gotten another job at a private school in town. This can't be true, can it? |
