+1 My DS got 99% on the IAAT and 490 on the SOL and he took Math 7 Honors in 7th grade. His 6th grade math teacher recommended not taking Algebra 1 Honors, even with the IAAT score. (He did get an A in Math 7 Honors.) |

My kid had a similarly bad experience with Algebra 1 HN. Maybe the same teacher. She assigned at least 40 to 60 problems every night. Instead of teaching the concepts, she checked each kids' homework (no credit if you didn't show complete work for every problem) Then she assigned more homework. At back to school night, she said she gears the class to the best students and that kids would have to stay after school if they have questions (and then go home late and do their two hours of Algebra and all their other work). She would not cover anything in class beyond one sample problem. |

This was my daughters experience also, but with a male teacher. I think some teachers elect to teach the advanced classes because they don't want to actually have to teach. |

I think any child in 6th grade honors math can take it, not just AAP kids--at least at my DC's school. The 6th grade honors and AAP classes are together. If your child isn't in that class, jumping from regular 6th grade math to Algebra 1 Honors, the class 7th graders take, would be a difficult jump. |

You don't need to practice for it... there isn't supposed to be a widely distributed test. It's what your child has been learning in adv. math/pre-algebra. If they aren't ready for it based on what they are learning at school, they really shouldn't be pushed ahead into Alg. next year. FWIW, my 6th grader took it last week after the extra long Xmas break and unplanned snow days and said it was easy. So, my impression is that all the necessary skills were taught in 6th grade adv. math. If you really want to see a sample, google it on youtube. But, don't push your kid into a HS class in 7th grade if they aren't already rockin' it in math. |

IAAT(IOWA algebra aptitude test) administered in FCPS/LCPS/PWCS and other counties in NOVA for placing students in advanced math track. FCPS: 6th grade students take the test in January and they take 7th grade SOL They need to get a pass advanced score on SOL( > 500) and > 92 percentile on iAAT( may be >= 92) The combination of these determine their algebra 1 placement in 7th grade NOTE: Student need to be in AAP Center based or school based program [u]LCPS: students take it in 5th grade which is combined with SOL score to be placed in advanced math in 6th grade which leads to algebra 1 placement in 7th grade PWCS: students in 5th grade who get a pass advanced > 525 on SOL are invited to take IAAT test. There is sliding scale county follows which considers SOL score and IAAT score to place them in Math 7 or Math 7 extended in 6th grade.
