I don't agree with Meren on a lot of levels. However, she was correct in this complaint about cutting crossing guards.
However, she would do better if she lobbied her own Board and Superintendent for better choices: I do realize we need people in the central office. However, the pay for some of these people is exorbitant and some of the jobs are pretty fuzzy. I would estimate we could save --at a minimum--$10 million on staff at the top--and that is likely not even close to half of what they have. When I taught school, we referred to them as the "people who do lunch." Teachers get so little planning time--and people at headquarters demand things that take up their planning time. And, remember, it is not just the salaries of the people at the top, but their staffs. The School Board hired additional --and expensive staff--just this year--you know the same year they are complaining about budget. Not only that, but several of these people are well known political activists. Campaign managers, etc. With benefits, that has to be at least $2-3 million dollars--maybe more. Eliminate Instructional coaches. I realize some people think they do great work--but most are unnecessary. I know one who was hired in an elementary school. And, what little experience she had was as a specialist--not a classroom teacher who had experience with IEPs etc. Cut waaaay back on purchase of tablets, etc. Sure, teachers need to use all tools available, but this is not working for a lot of kids. Cut out International Baccalaureate. That would be several million dollars more. We all know it is more expensive, but, more important, many of the students in those schools would be much better served by AP. That is a fact. Move ahead quickly with AAP in all middle schools. That would give great savings in transportation and would also streamline a lot of other issues. It is not just the gas, bus, and drivers, but it is also the scheduling people and the selections above the school level. Having been a teacher, I know how much growth can occur at the young level in elementary school. I think AAP should be scaled back there. Maybe, eliminate it in third grade and see how that works. It is not the old GT program. Maybe go back to GT centers--scale way back. Big savings there in transportation and staff in HQ and the schools. |
Have you any idea of the time and expense of tunnels? |
I dislike McKay very much. Having said that, he is technologically inept as well as idiotic. Having said that, he should have just called her an A##hole..way less controversial than bimbo and we wouldn't be discussing this. |
That's the point. He didn't say a##hole. Instead he chose an insanely old fashioned sexist term last heard in teen 80's movies. It's so dumb and specific that you know he is using that term all the time behind closed doors, to his male colleagues. I'm not outraged, I'm disappointed and I hope the fairfax dems condemn this behavior publicly. |
Do those more professional ways include covering up this behavior? Fairfax women have a right to know if officials are misogynist behind closed doors – – or in group texts — and if “handling it professionally” means keeping it a secret I’m against it. |
It's been universally acknowledged by both parties in the County that the overhead metro in Tysons was a huge mistake compared to the tunnel and involved moving utilities as well. It also wasn't competitively bid and it made Herrity look inept both on policy and fiscal responsibility. |
Texts from school board members and board of Supervisors using their private device containing any school or government related business is public information subject to FOIA, not private communication. The school board learned this during the TJ lawsuits. |
Herrity is a smart man. Do you realize how impractical and ridiculously, obscenely expensive tunnels are? |
| I am just as troubled by the veiled threats in those text messages as I am by the name calling. McKay is essentially telling Meren that she better fall in line or the school district will get less funding. The public deserves to know that the board of supervisors holds this over the head of School board members for purely political reasons. If we want to know why things are a mess, this is why. The Democratic Party machine is in complete control of who ends up on the school board. I am sure this isn’t the first time a school board member has been threatened to stay on message or risk the loss of funding. |
The veiled threats are MORE concerning than name calling. |
Yup. He is a total douche. At least we have proof now. |
It was cheaper and it was being competitively bid. You obviously weren't part of the discussion. Herrity was affiliated with the one company allowed to bid so he is only fiscally responsible when it doesnt benefit him. They did a terrible job as well. |
| This is the best thing that has ever happened to Meren, at least politically. Her behavior during the boundary reviews has been erratic at best, but now she’s a brave defender of children being insulted by an old-school Neanderthal. Couldn’t have scripted it any better. |
These have been proposed to the school board from before this website started. They seem to be in no rush to fix them. |
Herrity has an easy job being the only R on thr board. He sits back and complains. He does no work and has no ideas. Melanie is wrong about the budget and wrong to constantly attack the biggest funder of fcps. Especially when they again increased the transfer to schools even though enrollment has declined. If she wants something funded, she should move things around in the FCPS budget to get them. FCPS could use its money to hire HS crossing guards from the vendor. And McKay should resign. His misogyny and language is unacceptable. |
