Objectively speaking, what harm is caused by illegal immigration? (Thought experiment)

My state’s public school enrollment is supposedly already down 30% this year due to families being afraid to send their kids to school.

But, I have read that there are two online school programs that are exploding with new members. Didn’t even know they existed.

My kid spent her entire senior year remote learning in 2020-21 because she’s Chinese, all the kids were telling her she was contagious and shouldn’t be trying to infect everyone else. She was adopted in 2002 and grew up with all of those kids. They were cruel to her.

For the people who are concerned with HIV, plenty of US citizens and legal immigrants who are HIV+ travel back and forth to the US all the time.

You’re not preventing HIV from getting into the US by excluding immigrants who test positive.

HIV is already here. In every state. That’s why while you are watching TV you see all the advertisements on for medication to help you live a normal life with the virus.

Ridiculous.

Yes, your answer is ridiculously wrong.

All people in the US who are not of original Native American descent are immigrants.

What countries were your ancestors from? We’ll all wait to find out

What a nasty view of the world you have. I feel sorry for you having this much anger in your heart towards people who have done nothing to you.

I’ll tell you what’s good about illegal immigration

They make good food

They clean houses, office buildings, hotel rooms, restaurants, schools

They have cleaned my house in particular for over 10 years

They pick produce

They do my landscaping

They helped clean out my house after a hurricane

They put my roof on

They groom my pets

They make excellent food and serve and deliver it

They do laundry

They do your nails and wax you

They drive Ubers and taxis

And a thousand other things

Harassing underdocumented immigrants and making them afraid to go to work is why food prices and the prices of everything are going up everywhere.

You can have all that with legal immigration. You have listed all the things YOU get out of illegal immigration and it’s so transactional it sounds vaguely and unintentionally exploitative. What happens when those people need medical care or get too old to work. Are you going to help them?

In the US system, you are basically stuffed if you don’t have medical care or some sort of pension for when you are old or unable to work. You need people to be here legally to be able to participate in those systems. And, yeah, maybe you should be paying more for your produce and manicures so those workers can have those basic levels of

We are currently harassing people in the legal immigration process, too. People who are married to citizens, people who have temporary status and going through the process, they are being swept up. We are also, by design, scaring off people who might apply for legal status, including highly trained people. It's not a good time to come to the US for anyone.

Southerners used to say the same about their slaves. Gotta love cheap labor.

Whenever someone’s lead off point in an aneg is that the other side is racist, they are losing the argument.

I'm going to assume that these citizens would be employed in the same jobs as this group of people currently is, so I'm not talking about shortages of landscape workers, slaughterhouse workers, ag workers, disaster cleanup workers, and so forth. According to statistics we would have a somewhat higher crime rate. Probably a somewhat higher rate of illegal drug use (migrants are less likely to use drugs). I'm assuming we need the population numbers, including to support the social security retirement program. We might have a larger burden on assistance programs if pay rates for the people who replaced them did not change, but we wouldn't be able to blame immigrants for that. Seriously, I wonder what the actual threat to borders has been. While supposedly Biden opened the borders we didn't have terrorist attacks from people who had slipped through as far as I know.

If in this thought experiment these people were not replaced magically, we would certainly have shortages of healthcare aides, maintenance workers, ag workers, meat processors, roofers, and disaster cleanup workers. Not only would there be fewer people to care for elderly people who need to be cared for, there'd be fewer people paying into Social Security to pay for their retirement income (which, in long term care, usually goes to the LTC facility).

I also wonder about the issue with assimilation. What exactly does that mean? Learning English? Most people who are able to do so to learn English one way or another, but if not, so what? It seems to me most people who complain about lack of assimilation are complaining about language and clothing as the most visible attributes of a population that is not assimilation.

Is it the slippery slope theory? That if a significant number of people manage to cross the border illegally every year and to stay for an extended period of time it will become an uncontrolled avalanche? Would it have been a bad thing if immigration laws had been changed to make immigration much, much more accessible legally and reduce the burden on the systems set up to deal with illegal immigration?

I'm truly trying to consider a blank slate take on this.

If you've rules, enforce them or change them? Why make some wait decades, document everything and pay money to get the same privilege as someone who just walked in?

Another limousine liberal addicted to indentured servants.

The best part of this is the complete lack of acknowledgment of how incredibly entitled this all comes across.

I’m fine with lots of high-quality immigrants who are smart and hard-working and can support themselves and their family and love America, as long as it’s through legal channels.

"High quality immigrants"? WTAF.

Ask Canada. Literally. Canada’s immigration system is based on “points.” You only get in if you have a degree or you invest 1 million+ Canadian dollars.

Unskilled worker? ZERO points. Canada only allows high quality immigrants; others caught illegally are deported by Canadian authorities.

That’s not true you ignorant wretch.

You cannot simply lie all the time anymore PP, now that search engines are ubiquitous:

“To immigrate to Canada, you typically need to meet specific requirements based on the immigration program you choose. Common requirements include proof of language proficiency, educational credentials, work experience, and health and security checks.”
