That was the case in 1980 too. But look what happened then. There is no reason to believe European countries will not view this as a viable option. It is far less disruptive than a trade war, doesn't seek to dissolve NATO, and is a humiliating defeat for Trump. |
The Olympics are cute. This is the World Cup. Only an American would convince themselves this could happen. |
| Are teams confident that their players will be allowed entry (and exit)? |
|
I don't think anything is going to come of boycotts. However, I do believe it will be a shitshow. ICE goons will show up to stadiums to round up brown people because a large portion of the fan base in the US are brown people. There will definitely be immigration issues that affect either players/coaches/staff, or their friends/family.
Depending on the severity of the problems, some of the games will end up getting moved outside the US. |
You must think this is just a bunch of soccer matches. Years of planning goes into it. There is no deviation from the plan. Host cities have received tens of millions of dollars for infrastructure improvements. Hotels are booked. Training sites are secured. You’re going to be very disappointed when nothing gets moved. |
+ 1 As much as I cringe that the US hosts and wish we could move it so it doesn't become a shitshow, I don't think Americans recognize how big a sport soccer is to anyone not an American. Soccer encompasses the world. |
Agree that as things now stand, games won’t get moved. If the violence gets significantly worse the calculation may change. There’s a big difference between boycotting an authoritarian regime and being afraid for the teams’ and fans’ safety. It seems though in terms of attendance, the numbers of foreigners saying they won’t attend games in the United States are increasing. The video of Renee Good being gunned down has shaken many people who were already edgy about the need for burner phones and whatnot to visit the U.S. |
No reasonable person is worried about driving their vehicle. Take a ride on the Beltway tomorrow morning or evening. |
You guys might want to check the European papers. This has already been proposed as a last resort by some. |
FIFA is in charge, not Europe. |
lol. FIFA can’t force people to travel to the USA. |
Since those teams are here legally, no issue. |
Until they are not. There are millions of people who were here legally and are suddenly being told it doesn’t count and being harassed and arrested and deported. Who knows how many naturalized citizens are being treated like “illegals” and what of the tourists who were thrown in jail upon arrival because they had “unacceptable” social media. You think no one knows about this? But the teams showing up does not mean the fans will. And that’s where the tourism dollars are. |
They don’t need to. Those people actually pay FIFA to show up and watch a match. Just wait. Bars will be packed. Stadiums will be full. Matches will be must watch events. This boycott topic is the silliest tantrum on DCUM to date. Normal people will have a great time while disregarding politics. |
Simply delusional. |
