Football fans in those countries care more about the beautiful game than Greenland.

Europe should boycott and host an off cycle euros, and invite the big central and South American teams

You are living in fantasy land. This is an actual world championship, not an American version of a world championship between only American teams. Nothing is going to change the World Cup. No venues will change. The stadiums will be full of corporate types and rabid fans. People will come from all over the world. No one cares about the politics enough to miss the biggest athletic contest on the planet.

That was the case in 1980 too. But look what happened then. There is no reason to believe European countries will not view this as a viable option. It is far less disruptive than a trade war, doesn't seek to dissolve NATO, and is a humiliating defeat for Trump.

The Olympics are cute. This is the World Cup. Only an American would convince themselves this could happen.

+ 1

As much as I cringe that the US hosts and wish we could move it so it doesn't become a shitshow, I don't think Americans recognize how big a sport soccer is to anyone not an American. Soccer encompasses the world.

You guys might want to check the European papers. This has already been proposed as a last resort by some.

FIFA is in charge, not Europe.

lol. FIFA can’t force people to travel to the USA.

They don’t need to. Those people actually pay FIFA to show up and watch a match. Just wait. Bars will be packed. Stadiums will be full. Matches will be must watch events. This boycott topic is the silliest tantrum on DCUM to date. Normal people will have a great time while disregarding politics.

Innocent people are being murdered in cold blood on the street. And protesting this would be a “tantrum”?

You’re fked in the head.

I don’t know about a boycott, but I don’t think as many people as expected will travel here, and they were counting on that because Americans don’t care enough about soccer to fill stadiums. Why would fans come here when you can go to Canada or Mexico instead? Our skies are not safe, and Trump will send his goons to host cities to round up brown people. Who would want to witness that? And I could totally see teams deciding not to risk coming here and having their players and loved ones killed or detained.

My city is hosting. People are excited about the infrastructure improvements. But I have heard lots of people say things like “…that soccer thing happening this summer.” Our mls team does have a huge fanbase, but it is very liberal. So many of us lost interest when fifa bent the knee to Trump.

I had signed up to volunteer, which was supposed to be highly competitive. I have just ignored all the emails inviting me for an interview. I have now received about half a dozen saying “LAST CHANCE to come for an interview! Last chance!” So I’m thinking it’s not as competitive as expected.

The wealthy will still show up

These sort of events will only be for the elites soon.

You just have to look at the prices for tickets now. A far cry from the roots of soccer.

NP. I don't disagree that the WC will probably proceed as planned. But your assertion that "normal people" will have a great time while disregarding politics is backwards and shows what a self-centered, ignorant POS YOU are.

Normal people are HORRIFIED by the actions of the US Government right now. Normal people are trying to figure out how to stop the assault on our country by the Trump administration. Anyone partying it up at a bar watching soccer and thinking everything is A-OK right now is a worthless POS. Screw you and all the jerks like you who think what is happening is okay.

So...pretty much like everything in our country right now.

I was really excited about it but Trump ruins everything. Everything. Everything.

Yep. Dh and I were super excited and planned on going to multiple cities. Now we can’t even get excited about matches in our own city and fear that it will bring Trump’s gestapo here.

Since those teams are here legally, no issue.

Until they are not.

There are millions of people who were here legally and are suddenly being told it doesn’t count and being harassed and arrested and deported. Who knows how many naturalized citizens are being treated like “illegals” and what of the tourists who were thrown in jail upon arrival because they had “unacceptable” social media. You think no one knows about this?

But the teams showing up does not mean the fans will. And that’s where the tourism dollars are.

Simply delusional.

As a fan, I'd be afraid that after paying $$$ on plane, hotel, tickets, DHS will turn me away at the airport for something innocuous I reposted about politics that they didn't like on social media. I wouldn't chance it.

Many Europeans and Middle Easterners post things that are anti-Israel. That alone will get you turned away at the border.

Boycotts are great ideas. Yes, boycott the World Cup!!

I heard on NPR this morning that 70% of GDP in the United states is consumer spending, inclluding tickets to sporting events, restaurants, hotels, souvenirs, etc. ets.

So, all of us patriots who want to defend democracy, can take the very small step of curtailing our consumer spending, including skipping out on the World Cup.

I've stopped all of my shopping, except for what we need to survive, ie food, gas, emergencies when something breaks.

No more Amazon, Target, Home Depot, etc. etc.

I have more time.

And I have more money. I'm keeping my money instead of sending it to the oligarchs who are destroying our democracy.

70%. That's enough to stop Trump and the oligarchs.

Stop filling the oligarchs' pockets. Stop buying stuff you don't need.

You should stop paying for internet access and your cell phone to. That goes to oligarchs.

White UMC women are saving their money while low SES women are shopping as usual to provide for their children.

At this point the World Cup should be moved. Republicans have said America is unsafe and rioting. So much so that Trump wants to invoke the insurrection act.

Under Republicans control the US is not longer a functioning state. How can you have a World Cup in a failed state?

FIFA is a cartel and should be boycotted anyway.

i am not so sure of that.

I know quite a few wealthy Brazilians who have missed a World Cup match featurung Brazil since the 1970s. Owners of property in the US, visas and green cards and they just aren't inclined to show up for this. I know a couple of Europeans who fit that description and aren't planning on coming either. Just too much BS.

My mail keeps getting delivered. There are plows outside moving snow. I’m still paying taxes. Firefighters are on duty.

What is this failed state you speak of?
