Basically it means balancing the socioeconomic factor as best they can.

When MCPS wants to justify anything, they say it must be done for equity.

The term "equity" doesn't actually mean anything to them. Literally it is just a word without meaning to them. They should just say "apple" when they say equity and it would make just as much sense.

This is super confusing and I can’t believe they haven’t explained this yet. Wheaton is the only school other than Northwood that is gaining students, but Northwood is getting a new, bigger building. Wheaton (as far as I know?) is not. And it’s not like there isn’t space in the surrounding school; some are at 80ish % utilization.

I'm confused-- the maps seem to show the middle school articulation if SSIMS is closed, with no kids assigned to SSIMS but like 950 to Sligo (a little overcapacity) and 1250 to Eastern (way overcapacity.) Are they saying they would close SSIMS early in 2027? Or would some of these kids go to SSIMS and if so which ones?

Oh you’re right. I bet you anything they are going to have region 2 start the change and region 1 will wait for the ssims closure, like an extra year or two.

Oh you’re right. I bet you anything they are going to have region 2 start the change and region 1 will wait for the ssims closure, like an extra year or two.

Like middle schools stay the same for an extra year or two but high schools switch in region 1. That would be very confusing for families with multiple children.

It looks like they are assuming SSIMS closure in 2030 with additional capacity by that time at Eastern and Sligo. Looks like some students are moved to Takoma MS as well (I’m looking at Option E).

I’m not sure how the “holding school” proposal fits into that, though. Like where are the current SSIMS students while their school is being used by another school’s students?

The plan was that SSIMS would be a holding school for one year for newly expanded Sligo in 2030-31, including the SSIMS students just then rezoned to Sligo.

Right but what happens with the middle schoolers in that area between 2027-2030 if maps E, F, or G are selected? Do they plan to close SSIMS earlier than initially mentioned and have Eastern overcrowded until the new building is done?

They have been asked this and ignored it. Incredibly shady and disrespectful. And FU to all the BOE members who haven't asked about this once. I'm so disgusted by MCPS right now.
