If the entire graduating class of the USA applied to UVA, it would gross $300Million in fees. UVA budget is $5.8Billion.

Application fees are not a profit center.

A hundred million here, a hundred million there, pretty soon it adds up to real money.

But I think the bigger goal is to appear more selective.

Key word bolded.

And to take away holistic admissions to appease Trump.

Holistic admissions is how you get the captain of the polo, fencing or lacrosse team….non-recruited….

Test OPTIONAL and no essay is how you get them.

I know athletes that couldn’t attend T10s/Ivies because they couldn’t hit the minimum score required for athletes by the school (which was still lower than what general admits had to have).

Meshes pretty well with the overall decline of societal intelligence. That is why you have t10 students who start their freshman year never having read a novel or know how to self write without AI doing it. Dumb and Dumber.

I thought the complaint was that UVA was woke and that's why their president was forced out. Now they're maga?

You are assuming the PP is (1) informed and (2) posting in good faith. Neither is true.

NP. The Insider Higher Ed article last week provided copies of multiple letters from the DOJ to UVA requesting admissions files (including essays). This is definitely a proactive measure. No essays, no proof the school is considering race in admissions.

This is the most logical answer in light of recent events.

Nobody knows who actually write essays.

There are likely many individuals outside of admissions (attorneys, admins) who have to review everything now in light of what happened last month. They don’t want prompts that ask students about their unique backgrounds. It’s easier to just eliminate the prompts all together at this point.

This is probably not a decision that was made by Admissions. It’s going to be even harder for them to predict yield with more applications. Yes, it will make the school appear to be more selective, but it makes the process very challenging for anyone trying to build the class. How can you predict a student’s seriousness about a college if there is literally nothing extra they have to do to apply?

There’s a leadership vacuum with political uncertainty hinging on the gubernatorial election. Faculty overwhelmingly voted no confidence in the BOV. I imagine the AOs are feeling the whiplash.

But ultimately they’re probably relieved they don’t have to consider these extra BS short essays. The outcome won’t be any different.

To be fair, the optional essay about your connection to UVA was an invitation for legacies to write about their legacy status despite a state law outlawing consideration of legacy in admissions. Why ask if it is illegal to consider legacy? Maybe they were also illegally considering race through the other essays?

65% of Virginia HS graduates apply to UVA.

What is the profile of a student who wouldn’t apply if it required an essay, buy would otherwise?

really, 65%?! Do you have the link to this?

Typically bullshit DCUM response. The actual number is 18 at most, not 65. Last year there were 92k VA public high school graduates alone and 17k VA residents from both public and private applying to UVA

We know the last prompts they wrote were 2022. The tone of the blog was sad about the changes. On instagram, the dean always said the essays were their favorite part.

In 2024 the main supplemental was how you would contribute to UVA, or something along those lines and then the connection to uva which most people left blank.
