Serious question but why do old people love ice cream so much?

I’ve been to plenty of dinners and lunches over with friends and can’t think of one time outside of visiting elderly relatives or neighbors that I’ve been offered ice cream by anyone under 70.

I’m thinking back to being a kid too, the times I’ve ever been scooped a bowl of ice cream were all with elderly neighbors or relatives. Friends would have popsicles - sometimes the ones with cream in the center but nonetheless, I skewed toward only having ice cream with the elderly.

Where do you live, OP?
If you walk in downtown Bethesda almost any summer evening (or really any time of year) you will see lines of people buying ice cream at Jenni’s and some of the other spots that sell gelato and ice cream. Have you ever been on a beach vacation- everyone’s getting ice cream all the time. Stand in the frozen section at the grocery store and watch as people of all ages peruse the ice cream selections. Ice cream is popular.

My 6 year old loves ice cream. Liking ice cream has zero to do with age. What are you talking about?

But the old Frozen Dairy Bar was the best. Standing in the long line, with the choice of vanilla, chocolate, or a swirl. Best ever.

Born in the 70s and I usually have a pint or two of Haagen Dazs in my freezer. I like an affogato after dinner.

Everyone loves ice cream, Op

People run out of the swim school at all hours and zip over to the Dairy Queen all day long. All ages.

Several college campuses that we toured have a creamery in town. The roommates go to enjoy a scoop, sundae, or cone!

All ages love ice cream! Go to any amusement park! Long lines for an ice cream cone! This is not for just old people. Get a clue.

They are dying and cannot taste much.

They are remembering the days when ice cream was truly delicious. Who remembers when Breyers vanilla had only real ingredients and real vanilla bean specks in it? You'd get it to celebrate something special and everyone would be so happy. Those were the days.

I think this is a regional thing.

Soft serve is mid at best.

For me, Ice cream is just a vessel for rainbow sprinkles.

That surprises me. I don’t particularly like ice cream, but although I get the visual appeal of sprinkles, I think they ruin the experience of eating ice cream and other desserts. To me, they don’t have an appealing flavor, they add a very unpleasant texture, and they contain junk ingredients. I’d love for you to help me understand the appeal of sprinkles, apart from their being pretty.

It's the juxtaposition of creamy and crunchy. The taste is bitter and nasty but the weird crunchy texture makes it special. Bonus if you remember being excited by the colors as a 6 year old.

I am 52 and would eat ice cream every meal if I could. It’s like the perfect food.

There might be an ethnic component to it. Biden is Irish extraction as am I. I don’t think Asian or Latino families eat as much ice cream. I’ve traveled around Europe and ice cream (or gelato) is wildly popular in Italy, Spain, Ireland…. In Russia they eat it on the street when the temperature is below freezing and believe it helps warm you up! So I don’t know if it’s as much Bookers love ice cream as white people love ice cream.
