Thinking back as a mom, was Kate Gosselin really that bad?

My mother had a room built in our unfinished section of the storage basement. She had a room put up with cameras in it, a tiny window in the corner and it was bolt-locked from the outside. It was like a containment room, and it had a mattress on the floor and that's how I lived.”

When my mother would put me in that room multiple times,” Collin said, “she had zip-tied my hands and feet together and bolt locked the door, turned the lights off and had cameras there just watching me."

Why did she do this?

Did he abuse any of his siblings?

Or was she just torturing him?

WHAT?? Is this true?

Nobody in their right mind agrees to have six babies in one shot, specially if they already have toddler twins to care for.

Taking care of that many kids means teaching a small preschool class 24/7/365, can make anyone crazy.

There are catholic, amish, and other religious families who have this number of kids all the time. They dont have these issues but also aren't putting their kids on TV.

I would take what Collin says with a boat load of salt. His siblings have said he was a violent, aggressive, homophobe, with a loose grip on reality who threatened them with weapons. Collin, instead of taking responsibility for his actions, has just asked that everyone move on and forget about the past and be friends again. But, apparently what he did was so bad they don’t want to.

Yes, she could have reduced. That is not my position to judge her for, or to say what I would have done in that situation.

Not true. I went through fertility treatments in 2000 and reduction was discussed and no doctor I saw would agree to more than triplets. They were very clear in communicating the problems to be encountered.

They aren't having them all at once which increases the risk of health and mental problems for the children.

+100 In 2003, they would only implant 2 for me.

Having eight children is not the same as having twins and septuplets.

The only reason people do is because they don't listen to their doctors (who would encourage reducing the pregnancy through selective abortion early on) and instead listen to some old white dude who runs a church out of his basement.

And then once the higher order multiples are here, they get exploited for tv shows. It's gross.

You are misplacing the blame.

It rests solely on the money grubbing, moral-deficient greedy doctors who implant a litter of babies into unstable women knowing that is does not happen naturally and is dangerous for all involved.

The doctors who implant more than potential triplets are a special kind of evil and should receive 99% of your wrath.

And how would she have paid for her kids? Jon never had a real job. I think she got caught up in the money and probably felt like that was her best option to stay home with her kids. Can you imagine trying to be a nurse and take care of 8 young kids?

Jon did computers or something similar before they did the show

Jon had a job. He worked in IT. They met at a company picnic.

Jon did not have a job that would provide for a family of ten. He was a giant man child. He went on to be a DJ and acted like a teenager.

Jon had a good enough job to pay for fertility treatments twice.

You aren't doing that on a nurse's salary 20 years ago.

Exactly. A one or two episode documentary, sure. She used the children for her fame and fortune.

She did. It was all about Kate's ego. She thought she was really special. For years, she had that "bodyguard" Steve who was also her lover..Why would a mom in Central Penn. need a bodyguard? She was a legend in her own mind.

That's not Kate's thing, doctors didn't implant embryos via IVF. She's sketchy on the details but she was on a drug regimen to ovulate and doctors told her to abstain during a period of time to prevent something like higher order multiples from happening. Most sane people would follow protocol and listen to that, they did not. There's a reason the Octomom doctor had his license stripped (he DID do IVF with a bunch of embryos) and no one even knows who Kate's doctor was. They didn't do anything wrong, the Gosselins acted against medical advice.
