Look, it’s stupid we went so long without enforcing our borders. People will get hurt in the meantime. Did you hear the guy on Jeopardy last night who was barred from Taiwan for a year because he overstayed his travel visa by 2 hours? Why is the US expected to take whoever comes?

Because we are a country founded on immigration. When your white immigrant ancestors came over, it was just fine and dandy. But now that non-white people are coming over, you suddenly have a problem with it.

Good Lord. Study some history.
The people who came over 100 years ago were vetted. They were checked for disease and they had to be able to support themselves. There was a process and people who came followed the process.

That is NOT what happened the past 4 years. And, stop making it about race. We had tens of thousands, if not millions of illegal aliens from "white" countries breach our border as well. They need to go too.

Entering a country illegally is against the law... no matter when then did it. And, just because the laws haven't been enforced in the past does not make it right. About time our laws are being enforced now.

I LOVE how you tell someone to study history and in the same breath display such an abysmal ignorance of history yourself. Average processing time at Ellis Island was 3-5 hours. But please do tell us how carefully we vetted prospective immigrants back then.

11 million people over a period of 50 years is pretty different from the last four years.

Sure wish they did this kind of vetting today. Especially the bolded.

If an immigrant’s papers were in order and they were in reasonably good health, the Ellis Island inspection process lasted 3 to 5 hours. The inspections took place in the Registry Room (Great Hall) where doctors would briefly scan every individual for obvious physical ailments. Doctors on “the Line” at Ellis Island soon became very adept at conducting these rapid inspections.

The ship’s manifest, initially filled out at the ship’s port of departure, contained the immigrant’s name and answers to a series of questions regarding the details of their origin, destination, and their likelihood to become a public charge. This document was used by the legal inspectors at Ellis Island to cross-examine during the legal inspection. Contrary to popular belief, interpreters of all major languages were employed at Ellis Island, making the process efficient and ensuring that records were accurate.

Despite the island’s reputation as an “Island of Tears” the vast majority of immigrants were treated with courtesy and respect, free to begin their new lives in America after only a few short hours on Ellis Island. Only two percent of the arriving immigrants were excluded from entry. The most common reasons for exclusion were a doctor diagnosing an immigrant with a contagious disease that could endanger the public health, or a legal inspector being concerned that an immigrant would likely become a public charge or an illegal contract laborer.

I sure do wish our homegrown morons would get vaccinated, but I digress.

How was the diagnosis done? In the vast majority of cases, the doctor took a look at the person and asked a question or two. If the disease was obvious, they might have been quarantined or turned away.

What kind of threat do you think people pose after living here for 10-15 years and working among the rest of us?

You know what we do today? We put these people in detention centers in such close quarters that they get sick. We treat them like cattle.

How many people crossed the border illegally over the past 4 years you think? Do you think ICE is only rounding up those people?

Exactly. The problem began decades ago when politicians on both sides of the political spectrum looked away from what was happening in Ca and Tx because it benefited businesses. BOTH parties are at fault for looking the other way. Agriculture and other big businesses needed the illegal immigrants and all of us liked the cheap lawn services and cleaning crews. At some point all the tech companies wanted the to allow more Asians in. Money wins. Corporations get to do what they want and if they say they desperately need cheap labor, they will get it.

We need to enforce immigration laws. I hate what this admin is doing because they are about the big show and rarely approach things from a rational perspective. They should be targeting criminals first but clearly that's not easy enough so they do what gets them on the news for good or bad.

Because we are not a shithole and we have laws against kidnapping people and deporting citizens. If this moron in the WH would follow the constitution and the laws on the books it would be a much different story.

This isn't the whole story though. We need to enforce our immigration laws and deport people who are here illegally. It doesn't matter that you want to make an exception for your house cleaner because "she's like one of the family". gag.

The problem with what this administration is doing is that they are cancelling the lawful presence (including parole, TPS, applicants for asylum or other relief, and others) of people who are in the US, thus rendering them illegal, and then deporting them.

This is both unconscionable and directly targeting people who are trying to follow the (crazy!) immigration rules of the U.S. It makes me sick.

I don't know a lot about immigration law but I just googled some of those terms and it says parole is discretionary and temporary and TPS is "temporary protected status".

AND?

I mean, I don't know. Are people entitled to discretionary and temporary status being permenant? Is that how people with the status view it?

I guess I am not understanding why it is expected that discretionary and temporary status is not discretionary or temporary.

It's a lawful holding status determined to be necessary for that individual's protection given their circumstances during the very slow legal process (and it is not the individual's fault that it's a slow process).

Exactly. It's disgusting that MAGATs just want mass deportations of brown people. We can all agree that violent criminals and those who have deportation orders need to be deported legally. But those people who are here following the rules and working with the system have no reason to be deported.

Are there mass deportations of Asians, SE Asians too?

We need comprehensive immigration reform. We need to work with people who have been here for 20-30 years working and paying taxes. We need to deport people the right way, meaning they deserve due process like everyone else. We need to not say "oh well" when we deport people who have not broken the law.

Most people fall out of legal status, so they arrived legally.

What is an illegal entrance?

Nothing like having red sanctuary states. Talk about fermenting unrest. Remember under Trumps order US active duty troops can be deployed anywhere in the US not just LA. They can also arrest, detain or do whatever they want. They are only accountable to the President and his orders.

These are the same troops who cheered when Trump said their enemy is the democratic governor of California and the mayor of Los Angeles.

So is deploying US military to arrest US citizens. Which is the greater crime? Which threaten the US citizens more?

I have family traveling to New York. Will Trump shut down all travel?
