They reduce vaping by at least 20% because of increased searches

They do work. It’s known to cut down on vapes and can prevent a weapon from coming into the school. Why wouldn’t you want that? These are serious issues that affect all students at all schools. The lines will get shorter and the kinks will get worked out. Safety is the number one priority and these are needed at every single middle school in high school. It’s terrible it’s taken FCPS this long. There was just a school stabbing! Vaping is at an all-time high, which kids get at school. Thank you FCPS for starting this process and please get more weapons detectors and better school security measures.

Nonsense. Any kid who wants to smuggle anything into school will simply go around the metal detectors. They only have them at one door and only operating during arrival. This is security theater and punishes all the kids for no reason.

My son's swiss army knife was not detected BTW.

Troll. Your “son” shouldn’t have a Swiss Army knife at school. Such a troll. This is by a joking matter and you’re sick.

I don't think they are trolling.

Its quite normal for teen boys/men who are outdoorsy, masculine types to have swiss army knives with them. They have many tools on the knife that are super useful for lots of situations.

They could reduce vaping by nearly 100% if they monored the restrooms.

Any kid who wants to get a weapon in the building can easily do so.

How exactly?

Are you serious? The metal detector is at one door and manned for on-time arrivals only. In one minute I can think of 100 ways a kid could get a gun into a school.

Just crack a side door open. Like Uvalde.

or what about the kids going in and out all day from trailers?

Seriously, there are a MILLION ways a kid can get a gun into a school around 20 min of manned detectors during arrival. This is security theater at its worst.

My dd reports another huge backlog this morning. What's concerning--besides all the wasted instructional time--is that none of the seniors are there these past few weeks AND many kids seemed to still be out of town for the holiday. The parking lot was deserted. So its 45+ minute long lines with only 70% of the students present.

+1. Metal detectors and security screenings only work if they're round the clock and there's no way to get back outside once you're in.

Agreed and I wish they would do it or allow parent volunteers to stand at restroom entry and monitor.

Searches and metal detectors are 2 very different things.

Exactly this

Hey, retired school teacher here. I remember when it was against the rules to smoke in the schools. The girls' bathroom smelled like a bar.
Teachers did monitor, but seldom caught anyone.

Monitoring would help, but it certainly would not be near 100%.

I pushed the buzzer at the entrance and waited and waited for an answer and to be let inside. Pushed again. No answer. Finally two very young students saw me waiting and pushed the front doors open for me. I very hesitantly walked to the main office and stood for another few minutes until some staff member asked if she could help me.

The whole scenario made me deeply uncomfortable. I reported the incident but
never heard back nor am I convinced that this ES made any changes. I had to return there several times thereafter.
