The detectors will pick up a large metal object (like a laptop or a gun). They will not pick up a weapon the size of the knife that was used in the recent stabbing.

They will require at least two staff members to monitor them. Not answer yet on whether they will use them for students who enter the building outside of the beginning of school.

Yes, this is entirely security theater. Expensive security theater.

Are you sure they will be at every high school? Even schools like Langley, McLean, Oakton, etc.?

LMAO! Excellent trolling.

It was a legitimate question? Guessing you're an Annandale parent.

GMAFB.

You think the school board--this particular school board no less-- would put metal detectors in all the schools EXCEPT the rich, white schools? LMAO.

Well, an 18 year old from McLean shot a guy in Herndon last night.
Don't know which high school he attended.

They do work. It’s known to cut down on vapes and can prevent a weapon from coming into the school. Why wouldn’t you want that? These are serious issues that affect all students at all schools. The lines will get shorter and the kinks will get worked out. Safety is the number one priority and these are needed at every single middle school in high school. It’s terrible it’s taken FCPS this long. There was just a school stabbing! Vaping is at an all-time high, which kids get at school. Thank you FCPS for starting this process and please get more weapons detectors and better school security measures.

Nonsense. Any kid who wants to smuggle anything into school will simply go around the metal detectors. They only have them at one door and only operating during arrival. This is security theater and punishes all the kids for no reason.

My son's swiss army knife was not detected BTW.

Why is your future serial killer bringing a knife to school?

It used to be normal men to carry knives everywhere, and it's still not unusual for both men and women to carry Swiss army knives. They are multi-tools and can have a knife, scissors, small screwdriver and even a nail clipper. You can get little ones that you keep on your keychain (lost mine in TSA once when I forgot to take it off before leaving the house).

It's very useful.

+1
My dad ALWAYS had a pen knife in his pocket. And, he was constantly using it for various things.

Any kid who wants to get a weapon in the building can easily do so.

How exactly?

Are you serious? The metal detector is at one door and manned for on-time arrivals only. In one minute I can think of 100 ways a kid could get a gun into a school.

Former FCPS sub and I recall arriving late in the school day to an ES in 2022.

I pushed the buzzer at the entrance and waited and waited for an answer and to be let inside. Pushed again. No answer. Finally two very young students saw me waiting and pushed the front doors open for me. I very hesitantly walked to the main office and stood for another few minutes until some staff member asked if she could help me.

The whole scenario made me deeply uncomfortable. I reported the incident but
never heard back nor am I convinced that this ES made any changes. I had to return there several times thereafter.

Troll. Your “son” shouldn’t have a Swiss Army knife at school. Such a troll. This is by a joking matter and you’re sick.

They reduce vaping by at least 20% because of increased searches

I don't think they are trolling.
