My two children are having a great elementary and middle school experience at Lowell (K-8), worth reaching out.

Friends Meeting School in Ijamsville for those who live more northwest of SSFS (it could work if you live in the Gaithersburg/Germantown area).

Nice school! Someone said it was run down but I don't know what they are talking about. It is nice with a beautiful campus including a farm. Supportive environment. Low enrollment so I think they will have space.

A serious suggestion: for MCPS residents, the school offices are open today, call and make an appointment to talk with the Principal or your grade level admin about what it would be like to transfer.

We were at SSFS in the past as well as another private school. Switching to MCPS has been great for our kids. The academics and support have been much stronger, the resources more extensive, and it is a relief to work with educational professionals.

PP - which MCPS are you at? Seems like we missed the boat for DCC consortium and our home school isn’t a great option.

Also Mater Amoris which goes through MS.

Both progressive, Montessori schools.

Avoid Mater Amoris for middle school (7th and 8th)—they have had many issues trying to grow despite what they will tell you on the tour. Very few kids are rising up from 6th to continue in the middle school program, and some of the current kids are leaving.

Sheridan School has openings. K-8 school. Middle school might not have as many openings now because many families join at middle school to avoid public middle schools. Kindergarten and first grade have lots of openings. Probably spots open in other grades too. Good luck.

Surprising. Is Sheridan having financial troubles too?

Any ideas for rising 11th graders?

For Pre-K-8s: Sheridan, Green Acres, Norwood

6-12: Field and Burke

Reading tea leaves from the waitlist threads, Burke has more spots open than Field, but Field is expanding, so maybe they’d absorb students now.

Someone posted on the other thread about doing dual enrollment, a great idea for rising 11th or 12th. I wonder if parents could set up some kind of coop where kids get together for social stuff, and do the classes there.

How were the supports stronger? We’re not at SSFS but kid in 7th at a different private and the small class sizes have been amazing for her ( ADHD) my concerns at mcps are larger classes and kids with more SN, overwhelmed teachers?

Field (6-12)
Burke (6-12)
Green Acres (Pk-8)

Absolutely are welcoming and foster a beautiful environment for kids to be themselves in any form that may take, whether the kids are out or stealth or figuring things out.

+ Lowell PK-8 to this list

And Nora.

Just an FYI-Nora is 9-12.

I wouldn’t be shocked if a school like Friends Community has a low enrollment year or a few because of the federal upheaval. Can they weather it, especially on the heels of COVID? I don’t know anything about their debt situation, tbh, but it took more than a few years of low enrollment to do this to Sandy Springs.

Hopefully it will help some of the Sandy Springs families if FCS and others had a light year or people pulling out as RIFs continue.
