It seems like there are a lot of JMU fans on this board so that's probably telling. However, we visited there today and honestly, we weren't fans. Pros are the mountain views, it's clean, safe, and lots of student clubs and activities. The con in my opinion is that it's in the middle of nowhere. There's a small downtown but that's it. DD couldn't imagine being there for 4 years but everyone has their own preference. We prefer Charlottesville.

Not to bring math into this, but the census bureau puts Staunton and Harrisonburg into the same CSA. Each area has about 125,000 people, for a total of 250k in the Valley. Charlottesville MSA, on the other side of the mountains, has about 225,000 people.

So Charlottesville is smaller? Weird flex.

It’s not a flex. Like I said, it’s math. Do you want a concentrated single city center of 225k, or do you prefer a slightly larger population but dispersed over a distance of 30 miles? I think there are pros and cons of both.

Except Trader Joe’s. I hate Trader Joe’s.

Which one has more gangs?

Harrisonburg. Latinos in the poultry industry become radicalized. See https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2004/nov/15/20041115-113006-6626r/

Yes, exactly, they're small and depressing, whereas UVA has this gorgeous campus and quaint small-town vibe.

Much of UVA's campus is average and planning has been a mess. Lawn is lovely.

Np. Gosh in my opinion UVA’s campus is lovely and planning has largely been in line with the academical village architecture. To each their own.

You mean it's underrated. It's the very top public ivy.

Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan, UNC and Texas says otherwise.

What are you talking about? UVA is #4 public and at one time held the #2 spot for many years. It packs a punch for its size. I’ll never understand the UVA haters. Perhaps they or their kids were rejected??

Perhaps they and their kids never applied due to lack of interest in attending such a school as UVA.

Athletic, health/medical, North Grounds, Ivy Road, McCormick Road, etc. are average in my view. That is probably about 80% of the campus.

I think UVA should have moved on from academical village architecture. Jefferson would have, and that is exactly what he did when he designed the original buildings, using classical revival when the the prevailing style would have been Georgian. They fretted mightily about the South Lawn complex and its relationship to the lawn when it was in fact blocked from view, down a hill, across a major road, situated in a small ravine, and rotated 90 degrees compared to the lawn. The campus sprawls and lacks the density it needed closer to the central campus to maintain a connected, walkable campus. The city approval of the private 12 story Verve just off grounds illustrates what they missed.

All that said, I like UVA's campus better than JMU's. JMU is also quite sprawling. I wonder how long it takes to walk from East campus dining to the performing arts center. It has both a highway and train track running through it. UVA has a train track, but it seems much more peripheral.

That claim is tiresome and counterproductive.

I completely agree with this ^^.

I completely disagree.

So does most of the world. UVA is near the top of most beautiful campus lists every year. Never seen the other two mentioned.

OK. But I have seen Georgetown listed many times as well, which boggles my mind.

I can't even get over how someone can think this. Georgetown is objectively beautiful. And UVA in my opinion is tiers above JMU. One is a generic college campus by the mountains with nothing much to do outside of that and the other a walkable campus with beautiful architecture in a charming and vibrant college town with a lot of stuff to do in the area.

+100

Hey now. Nothing like JMU quad for some of us. I appreciate the beauty of UVA — my kid is there — but no need to disparage other campsuses (yes CAMPUSES). Geez.

However, I was just at UVA for a tour and it is a beautiful campus and sells itself very well. It's not for everyone, sure, but it's very pretty.

Can we not just agree that Virginia has lots of very good options? Let the kids pick which one they prefer.

YES! This!!!

JMU is a walkable campus. Hilly, but walkable. There is also a lot to do in the area, particularly if you like outdoorsy stuff. Sure, some of that stuff is driving distance and not right in town. But JMU's location in the Shenandoah mountains is very appealing to a lot of people for its proximity to those activities. It also has a lovely arboretum right on campus. The main Bluestone quad area is quintessential college and beautiful, as are the views from all over campus.

I like Charlottesville and Monticello, but have not visited UVA itself. Only seen pictures. And from what I can tell, Miami of Ohio has both JMU and UVA beat. So why do people care if JMU or UVA is prettier? They are completely different styles. Far more important things to base a decision on.

You all will gasp…..but I was at admitted student day at UVA last week and met people who a.) were also touring JMU and preferred it over UVA and b.) met people who were transferring into UVA from JMU as a second year because they preferred what UVA had to offer .

Everyone is different…..we’re lucky to have such amazing schools to choose from. All you haters need to get a life.

Well, you can't get pissed at the haters when you say everyone is different. The fact is, there are people who do not like JMU's campus and location and very much prefer UVA. To me, you can't even compare.

DP why can’t you just accept that some people prefer JMU and acknowledge that’s a respectable opinion?

+1
People just have to feel they are "better" and can only do so by putting others down.
