This is nonsense. Some kids might do better at JMU.

maybe 1150 SAT kids, but they wouldn't have the option for UVA in the first place.

Are you a uva booster or something? We know people that have turned down higher ranked schools for jmu.

I don't' like UVA. It's very overrated and was at the bottom of my kid's list just because instate flagship, but WTF who turned down UVA for JMJU???????????????????????????????????????

Are you drunk?

Are you crazy?
Seriously who the F choose JMU over UVA???????????????????????????????????

Come back when you can act like an adult.

Sane adults never choose JMU over UVA.

Of course they would. JMU is a different vibe. Move on, drunk uva booster

Let’s see numbers of how many of JMU’s 21,000 undergraduates chose JMU over UVA. I’d bet the number is less than 1%.

I'd bet the vast majority chose JMU over UVA because most of them, like my academically high-performing student, weren't even interested in applying to UVA in the first place. Threads like these make me happier and happier all the time that my kids were never interested in UVA or "prestige" and are mature and wise enough to know most schools are not worth the extra cost or debt.

Then it depends on which social vibe your DD prefers. Nobody here can answer that without knowing your DD or what your DD's personality and social interests are. Surely you've taken her to visit both campuses? What were her impressions of each? UVA has a significantly larger physical campus, though its enrollment is not much larger than JMU.

There is no comparison if you look at rankings (sources: Forbes, US News, Parchment - which shows that given a choice between the two, 90% choose UVA and 10% choose JMU). It is very silly to compare these schools as they attract completely different students.

If neither your kid nor you were interested in UVA then why are you spending your Saturday writing replies about it? Makes no sense.

UVA has the uglier campus

Oh god stop. seriously you’ve attracted the poster who thinks UVA is ugly (it’s not and is a world heritage site) and a guy who says that “most” faced with this choice go to JMU. Thats just delusional and I’d think most sane people would know that. There are things to love about both schools but they are not peer schools and I think, OP, you’re well aware of that. Stop the trolling!

Yea the vast majority (perhaps as many as 15,000) of JMU’s students choose JMU over UVA.

No connection to either school, and I am very favorably inclined to JMU in general. But a kid would need to have a very good, individual-specific reason to go to JMU over UVA, in my opinion.

Why?

My kid had this choice. We have Hokies, Wahoos and Dukes in our family. We tried to talk her into UVA. She’s a business major. Didn’t want to reapply to McIntire and not receive a spot. Went with JMU and is happy.

Cost wise, it’s much more economical. UVA McIntire is almost 50k, 2nd year to 4th if you get in. JMU business classes are additional $150 per class.

I also have a UVA COE instead of Tech Eng. Was a better fit school/ Eng major and a lot more expensive with 10k in top of basic tuition.

It’ll be fine. Our Duke grad in the family is the only doctor in the family.

JMU and VT are both SIGNIFICANTLY more attractive campuses than UVA

JMU has an interstate through the middle of campus.

It seems like there are a lot of JMU fans on this board so that's probably telling. However, we visited there today and honestly, we weren't fans. Pros are the mountain views, it's clean, safe, and lots of student clubs and activities. The con in my opinion is that it's in the middle of nowhere. There's a small downtown but that's it. DD couldn't imagine being there for 4 years but everyone has their own preference. We prefer Charlottesville.
