Tariffs or no, the bolded has been an issue for me for a long time. Being environmentally conscious means nothing if we are dumping our tech devices so frequently. We buy the best products we can afford at the time and hold on to them for a long time. My car is old (20+ years), but has 120k miles, good mileage for a gas powered vehicle (32 mpg on highway, 27mpg locally), and still passes emissions and safety inspections with flying colors. Debatable whether recycling it and other cars every five years is better than holding onto this vehicle. Similar on electronic devices.

Not happy about tariffs but if it gets people to be more environmentally responsible, they will have some positive effect.

Driving 20 year old car is not good for the environment.

A 20 year old car was built in 2005. It has essentially the same pollution controls and engine efficiency as a car made yesterday. You have zero clue WTH you’re babbling about.

Not only that but a 20 year old car has already existed long enough to “pay back” the environmental cost of building it in the first place. It’s lasted longer than its projected lifespan already, so keeping it on the road has essentially eliminated the need for at least one, possibly two, cars to have been built to replace it. That’s a MAJOR contribution in terms of energy savings and reducing consumption of resources. If something can last 2-3 times it’s protected lifespan, then that eliminates having to build a replacement for it every 10-15 years.

But putting a new car every four to five years into the dump is??? Even recycling the parts costs energy (hauling the parts, melting them down, etc.).

Don’t forget the environmental cost of manufacturing and recycling 4 new cars.

New car are better for the environment because old cars leak fluids and shed plastics and metal. Plus the older cars pollute more vs newer cars.

What are your talking about???? My car does not leak. It does very well on emissions tests. This is not some 1980s 8 cylinder behemoth. It is a sedan. Mechanics regularly ask if I would sell it to them ans oddly enough strangers have approached me about it as recently as last week.

My closest and dearest friend has had 6 cars in the time I’ve had this car. The most recent ones have been EVs. Not all of them have had long lives even after resale (she has known or lived closed to people who bought her cars). Producing cars that last only a few years before being resold / scrapped is not a good environmental solution. Producing few cars that last longer is the right solution. Ditto our tech devices and appliances. It may not be great for corporate bottom lines and worker pay checks but it is better for the planet.

Don’t get me started on the environmental impacts of bitcoin like operations.

Yes, PP is a fool. Manufacturing new cars is far worse for the environment than running old cars

We can finally all agree that Elon Musk hasn’t helped the environment at all. Manufacturing 3 ton single occupancy vehicles with massive batteries and rate earth metals just to relocate emissions from the tailpipe to the power plant. Just massively destructive to the environment and the climate. Democrats couldn’t grok this until Elon became a political enemy, but now they understand it quite well.

They object to migrants and trans folks, which are our values. I certainly admit that I wouldn’t mind seeing $3500 iPhones (temporarily) if it would hurt Republicans and help us. I admit that I was happy about the stock market crash and sad about yesterday’s bad g up day. I want to win back Congress from Republicans, so of course I want them to look bad.

These are the values of minority of people. You won't win another election if these are the values that you treasure above all. 3500 iphones won't be a dealbreaker. There are and will be alternatives, people buy second hand and people will stop buying iPhones if they are only good for 3 years before they become clunkers. Competitors will swoop in like they always do. Good luck.

Single occupancy vehicles? My Tesla Y can haul 7 people as long as 2 of them are under 5.4 in height. Tesla X can haul 7 adults better than Toyota Highlander. You are drunk.

Frankly, a lot of jobs including high tech where I work, do not need as many degreed professionals either. Even some jobs in health and other industries. We do need high school diplomas to be symbolic of people achieving certain standards. Some kids have been robbed of education because they’ve been promoted without attaining reading and math standards.

Maybe the adults in red states should prioritize their schools and kids education. Lord knows blues states throw enough money at them.

2025: West Virginia, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Nevada, Kentucky, Alabama, New Mexico, Texas, and Indiana rank among the least educated states in the U.S. These states struggle with lower educational attainment, lower graduation rates, fewer students in top universities, and lower scores on standardized tests.

They have fewer affluent metro areas and fewer affluent areas altogether compared to the coastal states and some parts of the South, Midwest. You cannot be this clueless to not understand that education standards and competition is more fierce in the areas with most concentration of education requiring white collar workforce. Nice parts of Alabama and Texas aren't falling behind Fairfax county.

Can you imagine if just one day in his life, Trump woke up and tried to make things better for Americans instead of looking for brand new ways to make everything so much worse.

Trump 47 is literally a gift from the likes of you. You gave us this and set us up for what's happening. If only you cared about Dem constituents in the last 4 years, but you ran away with the madness of your stupid culture revolution, identity politics, money printing and fluffing up of asset prices and enriching billionaires, and pissing off more than half of the population with asinine Covid measures that had nothing to do with science. Dems successfully executed massive wealth transfer started by Trump 45. Shall I say, congrats?

I am going to have to be honest here, wealth transfers started long before Trump 45, 2020 just went completely off the rails in many aspects.

. This is idiotic. Driving N old car is wildly better for the environment than building a new car.

Yup. And importantly, new cars put people in debt. Many times, it's people who can't afford the ride but they sign up for it anyway.

He has managed to isolate China and most other countries around the world know it. A game was played simply to go thru the motions of isolating them.

DOGE is identifying fraud, waste and abuse of the tax payer everyday. Billions or maybe even a trillion/year will be saved long term. Running things with common sense.

Unlike the last administration, whose sole action to every problem was to drop money from the sky on every problem , or implement "social justice" to anger the population through crazy policies, this administration governs well.

Unlike democrats, they don't just campaign well. They actually run things well. This is what the democrat party was before the elites took over.

America chose well. Have a splendid day!

I mean this kindly, I wanna have whatever it is you are smoking. It's clearly one helluva drug. I wish I could be this much checked out from reality. Goals!

What were you smoking when you told me the ONLY way to fix strangers flooding the southern border was through new legislation and that until then, the influx could not be fixed?

Trump found a brand new way by tanking the economy.

You lied to us. Just like you did about Biden's cognitive health.

No new legislation on immigration was needed. As we kept telling you, just enforce the immigration law in place.

But no, you kept it going to shove your ideology of multiculturalism down our throats with unchecked immigration and all the intended consequences thereof.

You democrats just can't be trusted anymore. You've proven yourselves to be untrustworthy elitist globalists.

Oh, but you trust Trump with the economy and your 401k portfolio? How's that working out for you? Trump's proven himself to be erratic (we actually knew that from last time) and untrustworthy (also knew that before he even ran. This was well known in NYC).

I trust ME with my 401K. I don't blame everything in my life on Trump. Got it?

I prosper IN SPITE OF Washington DC. They do damn little for me.

Yes, Trump is erratic. That's a feature. You don't F with him because you never know what will happen if you do.

President Xi Jinping...Big Beautiful Chocolate Cake...Syria Strikes. Google it.

android phones are for the poors

I use an android and I am definitely not poor by any measure out there. Of course maybe that's part of why I'm not poor.
