(ok, I'm going to list more than three) Cactus Cantina Potbellys Noodles and Co 2 Amys Matuba La Tasca Costal Flats (He likes the grouper fingers) (And I'm going to be honest here) Cheesecake Factory For some reason he doesn't do well at Indian places, so we take-out. He eats the chicken makani with pita. I don't think of Jaleo or the others as 'fancy' places. I always check first to see if they have high chairs and a kids menu. If they do, we'll think about it, but never on a Saturday or Friday night. I see nothing wrong with having kids in restaurants, as long as they are dining with a family, meaning not randomly running around while the parents are eating or at the bar. We have gotten very lucky with our son, but he has had tantrums at 'nice' restaurants and one of us just removed him and waited outside until he calmed down. If it looks really busy and there is a wait, we usually pass. I think it takes a few times to see what works for you. Eating early or lunch/brunch have always worked for us. |
| Nobody mentioned Dogfish Head! We love that place and it is very kid-friendly. Also, Joe's Pizza and Baja Fresh. |
| PP-how is the food at Dogfish? We live in Arlington. I have passed by the one in 7 corners and wondered if the food was good??? Thanks! |
Basically, every plate at a tapas restaurant is a child portion. Order a bunch of plates, including one (to come later in the meal) that you know your child will like, and have him or her try different things first. You get good food, you expose your kid to different types of food, and if you don't order like an idiot, it's not cost prohibitive (although more than McDonald's) Wins all around. And to those who think Jaleo is "fancy," I really don't have any response. Compared to Burger King? Yes. Compared to other table service restaurants? Not at all. |
| Love Jaleo and it has made our kids more willing to try new foods. I would not go on a fri or sat night at 8. (too busy and loud for us) but we love it for a sat lunch. |
| What do your kids eat at Jaleo? |
| Zaytinya, Lebanese Taverna, Jaleo. 15:24, our child eats the cheese plate, gazpacho, and some veggie dishes at Jaleo. Loves the asparagus with romesco. Oh, I'm getting hungry. . . . |

I've found the things my 16 month old son eats at Jaleo are: Arroz cremoso de setas (mushroom rice), Patatas bravas (fried potatoes without the alioli), Croquetas de pollo (chicken fritters), Buñuelos de bacalao (cod fritters), Trigueros con romesco (Grilled asparagus) and the chicken paella. La Tasca has a tapa he likes but I can't remember what it is!
Cafe Deluxe is good for kids at brunch, Mia's Pizza in Bethesda, we used to go to Rens Ramen and get him the add on ramen, which is just the noodles, but they closed. We tried the Burger Joint, but he wouldn't eat the sliders at all. We went to Columbia Firehouse in Old Town, and they were super welcoming to us and he LOVED the mac and cheese. If there is a game on and someone orders Hard Times Chili, he likes the overcooked pasta they have with the chili, haha. And any place that has noodles! |
