Yes! It was Jerome Marco. He was awesome, and Alan Goodman was pretty good as well. It's a real shame to see what has happened in not that long of a period of time. |
Yes, with another thread on DCUM: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1241106.page |
How about a school in their own neighborhood? With kids from a similar background who are used to dealing with this particular brand of BS |
Indeed. Marco was Principal for almost 30 years. Great guy! |
Some schools have special programs for troubled kids. Lots of HS around MoCo have such programs where kids are bused in from elsewhere. Why should Whitman be excluded from housing such programs? |
Umm no. Just because we’re not wealthy doesn’t mean our kids should deal with violence. They need to fund more schools for kids expelled from their home school and stop keep moving them around. |
You can always count on Whitman parents to come through with three arguments: 1) We aren't THAT rich. We're practically poor by Saudi standards. 2) All problems at Whitman are the fault of the "the group home" 3) Whitman families should be able to "buy out" of dealing with kids who have experienced trauma |
To your 3) : no not just Whitman families, all families feel that way
|
| MCPS needs specialized schools for troubled kids who are not in Juvie. Or Maryland could run these schools for the state. |
Apparently that's not the view of the poster who said kids should go back to their own neighborhoods where the other kids know how to deal with them... |
I think it is fine to have the programs at Whitman, but it needs to be more than optics. Much like some kids with severe special needs need 1-1 support , these kids need it too, but in a different way. They should have staff ensuring they are attending class and not just hanging out in the bathroom, should have lots of support throughout the day both academically and mental health wise. Just sticking them in Whitman and not providing a lot of support for them, doesn’t help them at all. Many of these kids have grown up with intense traumas in their lives, they need A TON of support. The current set-up helps nobody. |
| The kids on the video aren't special needs they are criminals |
This is the real answer that for political reasons no one wants to deal with. It should be this or jail. But in the absence of a place like this, it should be jail over a regular high school where they will be free to do something like this again. |
| Those boys fight like girls. |
Send them to Damascus, we will show them how to fight like men. |
