Fight at Whitman

One reason was racial disparity: "While blacks make up 23 percent of the district’s student population, they make up 58 percent of the students at Mark Twain, reflective of nationwide trends labeling more black students, especially boys, with emotional and behavioral disorders."

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/1432305/montgomery-to-close-full-day-program-for-emotionally-troubled-middle-high-schoolers/

And we voted for Elrich and Jawando, that were key in eliminating SROs (police) from schools:

""But to the point of moving in the direction of ending the disproportionate harm that’s happening in the form of arrest for students of color, students with disabilities, this is a good step in the right direction.," said Jawando.

Well.. you get what you vote for..

Agree. Jawando and Brenda are a real pair. Why anyone still puts up with their nonsense is beyond me.

County is clearly placing dangerous kids in a school with most highly functional (and highly resourced) kids hoping it will rub off.

-not in DMV but spouse who teaches in IB school and this is common occurrence

yup. Gotta keep the brown and black poors out the nice white neighborhoods.

The reason we keep "poors," as you so distastefully called them, out of wealthy neighborhoods is because Capitalism works. People talk much about how Capitalism rewards innovation and hardwork. To some degree, that's true, but what Capitalism really rewards-across the board- is puritanical culture. Don't be rude, don't, be violent, do keep your neighbor's in mind when making decisions, do be responsible for your own actions.
The reward for those behaviors is good jobs that pay well enough to leave behind those who don't adhere to those rules of society.

The longer you can't face that simple socioeconomic fact, the longer people will be held down.

You truly have no clues of what capitalism is.

In all honesty, you do not. Capitalism has been the driving force behind the most momentous advances to humanity ever imaginable. And yes it rewards and punishes people based on their actions.

I googled and didn’t find anything and it seems odd that there would be something outside the county. She said that most of her classes this year have about 30-35 kids in them.

Are they being bussed from Baltimore every day??

This isn't true. There are kids from outside of the zone who attend Whitman as part of a program called the Leadership Academy for Social Justice. These kids must live in the county and apply to the program. Its not making classes more crowded as its only 30 or so kids. But for some reason, it has definitely been scapegoated by many who know nothing about it as a source of problems.

Capitalism as we know it does not exist without hatred and racism. The working class united would not allow this, but they are divided.

When a group of students beat the daylights out of a kid, and use the N word gratuitously, the principal remains.

Hard to believe the absurdity of this school system sometimes.

I watched the video on X and can't believe this didn't make our local news (not national!) or get a write up in the Post. This boy was assaulted and could have died with one of the head kicks.

It did make local news. It was on Fox 5.

Then I stand corrected. Do you happen to know when?

The lack of concern by MCPS for the victims of violent assaults in schools is breathtaking. They have completely lost the plot with their focus on restorative justice and equity. Mark Twain needs to be reopened and properly resourced to accommodate the violent students that are terrorizing kids in schools throughout the county. Enough is enough. The amount of anxiety and distress these sociopaths are causing normal students is completely unacceptable. MCPS just normalizes the violence as an every day part of school. It's appalling what they've allowed to happened to what used to be a good school district.

Commonplace. That's why. OTOH, when fights (or murders, car jackings, etc.) occur in places one does not expect, that is news.

Because why should well-off kids from nice backgrounds be able to live peacefully huh? They should be forced to live in terror too.

Now you see the end result of supposedly "compassionate" programs. It's really just score settling and old vendettas come to life. Resentment for the achieving and functional class and punishment for their children.

If Whitman parents dont do something about this they should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

The facility where many of these troubled teens live has been there for the better part of a century, far longer than the homes most of the "well off kids" you seem to think should own the neighborhood.

Not the case. Their mission and service has expanded over time.

Second, if you look at the cluster map, the surrounding homes path to WJ, not Whitman.
For whatever reason...this site is annexed in.

The principal has sent a letter updating the community on the incident. Apparently, this was not an unexpected attack, but rather a group of kids who planned to go to the bathroom to fight. It doesn't change the fact that we have a violence issue that MCPS needs to address, but it does put this particular fight in a slightly different light.
