Tiny or odd things that make your morning better

If I’m up before the rest of the house, I like to curl up in a big armchair with a cup of coffee. On really good mornings my shih tzu will join me and rest his chin on my ankle and fall asleep.

I enjoy listening to him snore while his breath tickles my foot. It reminds me of all of the wonderful dogs I’ve had in my life. And it’s a really nice way to start my day before the morning madness starts.

+1 I turn on the coffee maker before I even go pee. I'm not ready to conquer the world, but usually it helps me feel like I can exist in it.

I set my alarm for 10 min. earlier than I need to wake up. I like to build in a 10 min. buffer so I can lay in my cozy bed and gradually get up. I hate jumping out of bed first thing.

DH makes my coffee every morning. It’s one nice thing he’s been doing ever since we got married. I love getting out of bed to a hot mug of coffee waiting for me.

Otherwise yeah we do all the make lunches, set out clothes, clean the kitchen, etc. the night before.

On a funny note, I call DH our “opener” because he is more of a morning person and will make the kids breakfasts and get the house started for the day. I’m more productive in the evenings so I’m the “closer” who makes sure the dishwasher is running and the counters are tidied up etc. before we go to bed. It works well because we both have our shifts and know who is supposed to do what.

When my kid(s) miss the bus, I drive them to school. An extra 15 mins of chatting or listening to the radio together before school/work. It’s a treat. Makes my morning better.

Little things like this make me realize that other people are leading very different lives from me...

Setting the breakfast table?! What does that even entail? We eat breakfast together every morning but people’s utensils depend on what they’re having. If I put forks out but my daughter ends up with yogurt, she needs a spoon. If I put spoons out but my husband makes scrambled eggs, he needs a fork. If I put anything out but I make a breakfast burrito then that was a waste.

The people who thrive on a strict daily routine find it easier to organize their lives. My parents set the breakfast table, because they always eat the same thing. They have hyper regulated and incredibly boring lives in which they always do the same thing every day. We don't. I won't sacrifice my breakfast whims for the ease of not having to think about breakfast, just like I won't ever wear a uniform - I'd rather spend more time picking out an outfit that makes me happy.

OK? And I grew up in a chaotic household where everyone was late, no clean laundry, no real breakfast, and it made me anxious and put pressure on me to care for my younger siblings. So I create peace and calm mornings in my household. Who said anything about a uniform? Plus even if you set the table you can always decide to change what breakfast will be. Ooooh, an extra spoon would freak you out?

You need a timer so it’s ready and no button pushing required.

NP and I don't like to leave small appliances plugged in overnight or unattended. I know too many people who have had home fires from coffee pots, space heaters, air purifiers, etc.

I leave the house with the dryer running. I live life on the edge. A timer is a lifesaver

Put my phone on living room charger before bed. Keeps me from doomscrolling all night.

1) I set the breakfast table the night before
2) Sometimes I cut up fruit that I'm going to serve for breakfast the night before
3) We lay out outfits sometimes; this especially helps if we realize someone needs to do laundry for a gym uniform or something
4) I set up coffee the night before
5) We always pack lunches
6) I try to empty the drain board so that all the dishes from the dishwasher that still have a bit of water on them can go straight into the drain board

Anything you do that helps with the mornings?

I like to wake up, take a quick shower, throw on whatever my valet has chosen for me, & fly my Gulfstream to The Vinyard for a light breakfast.

You are the Indiana Jones of home appliances. I salute you.

In addition to some of the other posts, I set my coffeemaker to turn on in the morning so it's ready when I come downstairs. I always go to bed with clean counters, an empty sink and if needed, run the dishwasher. My robot vacuum/mop also runs while we sleep so I come downstairs to clean floors. As much as technology has ruined some things, it's made life better in other ways.
