What would you expect as compensation?

Dispute what charge? The original one where OP paid the amount agreed to for the originally reserved room?

Or the $50 upgrade fee, which was already refunded when the upgraded room wasn't available?

What is there to dispute? They got a lower tier room, and the hotel took the upcharge for the nicer room off the bill.

When you arrived, you got the extra back, but it would have been too late to change plans. I would ask for a substantial refund, and if I didn't get it, small claims when I got back for whatever the limit in your jurisdiction is based on the bait and switch

Good luck with that...

It's text book bait and switch with the added wrinkle of the extra payment. I'd be confident in small claims court or arbitration

Bait and Switch is when something is advertised. When you get to the store or facility it’s not available and they try to sell, you something else. This is not that. Small claims would only be necessary if they didn’t refund you the extra money. People shouldn’t allow such trivial things like a smaller room without a view bother them after a few minutes of disappointment. Let it go.

And when they book their travel for that small claims case, they can try again for the same room.

I'd sue where I paid. They advertised to my in that jurisdiction and accepted payment there

Oh FFS people. The hotel did NOT advertise anything. The hotel guest called them and asked for a specific room.

OP, many people actually prefer the Palm Suite over the Pineapple.

Don't worry, OPs mother will arrive tomorrow and sort it all out.
