What would you expect as compensation?

Anonymous
Six months ago when booking the hotel room for the trip we are currently on, we called the hotel directly and requested a specific room. We had stayed in it before and liked the configuration and specific view, and were willing to pay whatever we had to to be sure we booked that room. When we called they assured us they would reserve that room, and we paid $50 more a night to do so. We did have the room class request in our reservation.

When we arrived last night, the room wasn’t available and won’t be available. They refunded us our $50 a night, but now it’s just not the same. The room we have now isn’t as large and doesn’t have the exact same view. We travelled all this way, went the extra mile to assure we spoke to and confirmed with an actual person at the time of booking, and now we are disappointed. Before I go downstairs this morning and ask for some other type of compensation, I’m wondering what that would even look like?

$0

They refunded the $50 and that is all I would expect.

You got your refund. That's it. It would have been good customer relations for the hotel to try to make it up to you in some small way, but if they chose not to I'd spend my hotel dollars elsewhere next time.

It seems like a bait and switch to me, at least enough to meet the defination. You stayed there based on that room and paid extra to guarantee it. When you arrived, you got the extra back, but it would have been too late to change plans. I would ask for a substantial refund, and if I didn't get it, small claims when I got back for whatever the limit in your jurisdiction is based on the bait and switch

Good luck with that...

It's text book bait and switch with the added wrinkle of the extra payment. I'd be confident in small claims court or arbitration

I think you got all that you are going to get.

I’d see what the hotel offers.

Explain it just like you did above. Ask why the room wasn’t available. If the result still isn’t what you want, take your concerns up to next level.

I’m not sure what I would expect if I were in your shoes but I would certainly not stay there again and I’d be sure to write a truthful review of the hotel on a review site.

I doubt you will get more. They refunded you the extra you paid. They don't know that you only stayed in their hotel to get that one specific room, they just know you wanted it and paid $50 to hold it.

Now you know that you can't expect to get that one room.

Yes, it is sad. But life is full of disappointments. The measure of a man (and woman) is your resilience in the face of these challenges. Will you be able to get back on your feet notwithstanding the slightly smaller room and slightly different view? That is a test of your greatness.

Hun, don't go all Shane from White Lotus on the hotel staff. Please.

What is a defination?

My DH is a pro at this. He’d ask for at least 1 night’s refund, maybe two or at least a resort credit or wow thing along those lines.
