There is a reason the democrats are generally for expanding the base of workers to pay into the system at this critical time. It's the GOP that keeps crashing the ecnomy and kicking people out of work.

Also, it's not a ponzi scheme. It's called a public retirement benefit. It's completely sustainable if we actually plan for it, and if the fiscal responsibility the Democrats institute when they are in power is continued by the Republicans. But we all know that's not likely to happen because the R's love to spend and hate to save.

We also could simply raise the cap on taxes paid to support Social Security and it would be completely sustainable. That would be fiscally responsible but involves (gasp) tax increases on those with incomes above the cap.

Maybe if they called it something different, not taxes but something else? I am just spitballing but how about we call it social security tariff?

We’re going to have to have some hard decisions. We got to bring the Democrats in to talk about Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare. There’s hundreds of billions of dollars to be saved, and we know how to do it, we just have to have the stomach to actually take those challenges on,” McCormick told Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo

This will be fun to watch because at the same time congressional republicans are cutting these benefits they will be giving tax breaks the rich. You know they will also go after the VA and veterans’ disability.

Benefit cuts are already written in to Social Security, according to the trustees' report. It is spending more money on benefits than money coming in.

That's not going to work with this lot. Those with incomes over the cap are generally not as gullible to fall for these kind of gimmicks.

But for the boomers' main working years there was a major excess of money coming in which Reagan and the Bushes squandered on government spending when they could have kept it in the Social Security Trust Fund.

Let's call it an "earned benefits stability fee" then.

You're an idiot. You're saying all taxes and spending are ponzi schemes. I guess the military funding is a ponzi scheme because we pay for it with taxes.

THIS. They made it part of the general budget and started looting it. It's not an "entitlement", it's something that every working adult pays into.

Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Republicans intentionally broke social security during what should have been it's best years to shore up the system. And now want to impoverish most of the country, which apparently the Republican base thinks they want now too.

Yes, they squandered it on corporate tax cuts, capital gains tax cuts, and the military industrial complex including two unfunded wars. Oh well. Elections have consequences. Pull yourself by your bootstraps folks. That's what we do in America!

I think these people calling Social Security a ponzi scheme don’t know that it is insurance and would probably be equally shocked to know how the insurance industry works.
