We’ll see, considering Trump’s a populist and not a conservative—I doubt it. Especially given how turbulent and vast the spectrum of views are in the house. But if it does happen, this will be the death knell of the GOP. If these kinds of cuts were what people wanted, anyone other than Trump would have won in the primaries. And down-ballot republicans would have done better than him. Instead the opposite is true. If you’re a vindictive Democrat this is exactly what you’d want to see happen though, because it would destroy the GOP. I say this as a first time Trump voter that will never, ever, EVER vote for another Federal Republican candidate (house, senate, or president). If they cut any of these programs. Cross my heart. |
Social Security is a perfectly sustainable program. Even with no changes it will continue to pay something like 75% of promised benefits, and minor tweaks like means testing or advancing minimum retirement age could get us back to a full trust fund. But Republicans don’t want to fix SS because of their harebrained anti-government ideology. Before SS many elderly were absolutely impoverished and malnutrition was not uncommon. But why have a sustainable social safety net when you can have an anti-government death cult? |
+1 You get what you vote for. |
Oh, they are definitely going after all these programs. I can't wait until all the idiot Trump voters get what's coming to them. |
+100 - trump said he “wasn’t associated with project 2025”. Clearly that was a lie. They will implement all of what project 2025 has written and then some. Good luck trumpers! |
You are a tool. I was born 86 and started working at 15 and havent stopped. 10k wouldnt be part, it would be pennies on the dollar. |
This is so dumb (of course you are a Trump voter) - DH and I were born in 1983. We have been paying the max SS taxes each year for over 15 years. $10,000 wont get close to how much we have put into SS fund. But sure get rid of it as long as I don’t have to keep paying into it. |
Why do the “hard decisions” always involve cutting benefits? Why not just raise taxes a little bit? |
I think it’s all talk. Congress and Trump won’t fix anything. They will personally get rich while the American people get stuck with the status quo. Although I do think they will deport people. |
It also could be fully funded if you just lifted or eliminate the cap on incomes (i.e., a tax increase) that are taxed but that's anathema to the GOP. But hey, you get what you voted for. I'll grab my popcorn and enjoy the show. |
Because the hole is too big (imagine if tax rates doubled overnight), tax rate increases don't necessarily translate to tax revenue increases (especially huge ones), and voters don't like tax increases. Ultimately, we need to solve the budget deficit by using every available tool: cut spending (including SS, Medicare, and the military, which are the three biggest expenses), increase inflation (to reduce the real value of the national debt), and increase tax revenue. Anyone who suggests otherwise is uninformed or lying. |
You must be new here because the last time the GOP voted to raise taxes, it cost HW Bush the election. Raising taxes (unless it's on blue cities/states/poor people) does not compute with the modern GOP. |
Middle-class Americans trying to stomp the fingers of lower-class Americans coming up behind them. Meanwhile we give billionaires a pass as they gobble up the entire GDP. |
‘Suggesting’. ‘ May be coming’
Good Lord |
I have to say if they cut social security at this point, I can take the money I’m paying into social security and invest |
