I can't believe this is real. How... bizarre.

Btw, the Al Smith dinner is supposed to involve an element of self-deprecation. There was none of that. It was the same old drivel from an old, tired, angry man.

And this was him trying to tone it down, bc eight years ago, he got so much flack for being so cruel and off-putting. Old, tired, and angry is right.

This is how it's supposed to be done:

Obama's 2008 address is here (starts around 23:00):

So Kamala can’t attend because that would mean being in a room of child molester supporters and rich old white men- but it was funny and cool when Obama showed up.

Times change, bub. Spotlight didn't come out until 2015.

And there was not extensive reporting before that right? And it’s not like Democrats show up at fundraisers for organizations that have never hid child abuse, like the public school teachers union, Hollywood galas, Diddy’s white parties, etc.

The movie “Spotlight” was the final straw, huh?

Weird amalgamation of events you collected there.

Look there’s nothing wrong with the dinner. It’s not verboten to attend. It’s got a very Camelot era vibe though. It’s not a big deal to miss it either for all you’re trying to make it into a big deal. Times change and the boomers are fading out. But hey, I don’t begrudge them their parties.

Gee, a bunch of religious people who embrace a cheater, rapist and convicted felon.

It's no wonder so many people despise religion and religious people. Too much hypocrisy.

What is its official purpose?

It’s a fundraiser for Catholic Charities which was clear if you watched Harris’s video.

Raise money for Catholic charities. Politicians come to get the blessing of the Archdiocese of New York. Big time Boomer energy event.

You know when Americans hate "The Swamp"? This crowd at this dinner is the epitome of that.

+1 and the fact that Trump courts big corporate money. How is he "draining the swamp"? He seems to be going to them with his hand out, and promising favors.

That was footage of the video playing at the event and there are literally no laughs the entire time. I have no explanation other than she is being paid to flop the race.

You can tell at the end of them playing the Harris video that the audio from the room was cut in the CSPAN footage while the Harris video was playing. In other words if people were laughing, you wouldn't hear it in this CSPAN clip. You can hear many people cheering after the Harris video ends.

Yes, and please circulate Harris’ video to all your Latino friends and voters in the Philly and Pittsburgh suburbs. I’m sure they’ll love it!!

I'm sure it had nothing to do with Reagan running as the incumbent.

BTW, 1984 was the first election in which I voted, grew up Catholic in a very Catholic part of NY, and the Al Smith dinner was not someting anyone talked about. It wasn't a big deal.

Im also from NY, first voted in 1980 and grew up very catholic. I heard of the Al Smith dinner because I read the newspapers. This was before Al Gore invented the internet.

wow this is totally awful, this is an old Saturday night skit that no one will get why why why? Come up with something more recent and funny, this is horrible Kamala didn't even do any of her own material and this skit is just awful. It would have been relevant in 1998 but its so dated and cringe now.

Actually, looking into this again, she picked this character because it seems to try to connect with the crowd as a catholic school girl from the Saturday night live skit, but in fact, it's actually quite insulting and not funny. Totally bomb and offensive and not funny wow. Who is advising kamala?

You do realize that the average age at Al Smith dinner is over 60, right? If they watched SNL in the mid 90s, they know who MCG is. Especially if you're a Catholic.

Like I said, big time Boomer energy event.

It would have been better if kamala came up there on her own with the jokes not hire some out of touch Saturday night live catholic skit to do the work. Sad. And the boomers don't care about this its cringe and sad.
