I cannot help but feel frustrated with friends who act so bent out of shape when they have to help their elderly parents

OP, please get help for your grief. You have every right to feel a loss, but the level of judgment you have for something you cannot fathom is concerning and could impact your friendships. Also, consider volunteering to give respite with the most challenging elderly.
