How were we healthier when our life spans were much shorter? |
Does not sound like you are familiar with any life span data. |
Tell that to my gestational diabetes dietician....I have to count everything. I actually weigh everything too! And one of the ways that I can manage having increased amount of carbs is by increasing the ratio of fat and protein. Having protein prior to carbs actually limits the glucose spike and helps with satiety. The glucose spike from yogurt, fruit, and granola is radically different when the protein content of the yogurt is 22g per serving vs 8g per serving when all other factors are equal (same fruit, same weight of fruit, same weight of granola). Carbs are not the only value that come into play when managing glucose levels. Ill also add that because that carbs are limited to 100-150g (175 if you are really lucky) you need to increase either in fats or proteins or both to get enough calories in. Even at a IMO super low calorie consumption of 1500 calories with only 75g P plus 150g C thats a total of 900 calories. 600calories or 66g would need to be from fat. And 1500cal is LOW amount for a non-short grown a$$ female who works out and is growing another human. |
Recently some pretty good science has come out about the benefits of IF. Read Michael Moseley's book. |
The problem is when you add strength training to this, which is recommended for women as they get older and face bone density loss. If you're on a low-cal diet, then your body isn't going to build muscle, and may actually lose muscle, if you don't get enough protein. |
The protein is for muscle protection/growth, not for bone loss. |
+1 to the nasty idiot assessment. |
DP and you really are an idiot. The top quote says "We were without counting for millennia," not "your grandmother didn't count." Not to mention the irony--our cavemen ancestors, who we agree didn't count, basically did IF as they went from feast to famine again and again. Did we evolve to do IF, then? Also, actuarial tables show that grandma didn't live longer than we will, even if increased rates of smoking and obesity are cutting into the gains of the past decades. |
+1000. We're living longer, both men and women, than our grandparents did. This actuarial fact is one of the reasons Social Security is in trouble (we're paying people to receive it for more years until they die), but I digress. I wish people would educate themselves instead of just sniping and insulting. |
Typical gaslighting dcum where they twist everything to feel superior. Ordinary people with normal eating habits do not count grams of protein. They eat moderate diets, mostly homemade meals, stews, beans, salads, roasted meats with veggies, or whatever your culture considers healthy.
But you can sure twist the story about how cavemen lived less and that it is okay to count grams of this or that macros and micros! You all know you are wrong and worse, your kids are watching you count grams, and they will have eating disorders just like you have, but you think you are doing it all for healthy eating! You know what PP meant, and you are gaslighting to justify your illness. Why on earth would healthy 40-year-old women need to count grams of protein? We are not living longer because a few of you are counting grams of this or that. We live less in most of the U.S. because we have forgotten how to cook balanced meals. Americans, in general, have dropped their lifespan again. If you were eating a pizza a day and all the store-bought ready meals, that is not the norm, and now you are counting grams BCS; you were too stupid to start with. Nobody is comparing our eating habits to cavemen. I hope you are not counting your stupid grams of protein in front of your kids, BCS you are doing some serious harm to them! I know from my experience when I gave in to mostly dcum idiocy of IF! My kids saw it all and thought IF was great! I am trying to fix it all now and have told my kids how sorry I am for this stupid behavior. You will dismiss my post, but I know you will because you are eating narcissists, and you are never wrong! Make regular homemade meals with some meat and eat as we did before the canned and prepackaged meal revolution and before the take-out insanity. |

Yes, there is good science about IF, but not for weight loss. Those crazy Soviets had fasting clinics in the 70s and they worked for illnesses. They would do 40 day fasts, but controlled by doctors and in a "rehab" centers, so to say. |
I haven’t read the previous posts, but has anyone mentioned edamame?
My doctor recommended it as a high protein/high fiber/low carb superfood. (Completely different than chickpeas, which are very starchy - high fiber but also high carb and low protein compared to edamame.) It’s been a game-changer for me. Especially this pasta (all the brands are good, actually.) P.S. I had estrogen-positive breast cancer, and none of my doctors are worried about adding a bunch of edamame/soy beans. No faux estrogen effects, according to my oncologist and other doctors. https://www.amazon.com/Seapoint-Farms-Organic-Spaghetti-Gluten-Free/dp/B084HY5LY6/ref=asc_df_B084HY5LY6/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693129827168&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=88728993254917731&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9005672&hvtargid=pla-1440055272621&psc=1&mcid=813c6888d54b3707a1ebe991ad67d4b7&gad_source=1 |
Your basic premise is entirely false because we have lost track of what normal eating habits are. Americans (and the world) are gaining tons of weight. Nearly every day, someone comes into this subgroup and says a variation of “I eat healthy and I cannot lose weight.” The first questions should be - what are you eating and how much. Often the how much gets lost around. That’s what counting does, helps you be sure about how much you are eating until you can reset your internal system. You sound so angry. I wonder why. In my experience, healthy (physically and mentally) people don’t sit around on an anonymous message board insulting people. |
I truly hate yogurt. Will never ever eat it with a spoon.
But it turns out I actually like smoothies made with plain Greek yogurt. (Plain is key - any flavored yogurt has a ton of added sugar. 😔) My doctors gave me focused on high protein/ low carb. So I don’t include sugar, bananas, or any other fruit except strawberries in moderation (low carb). If your doctor says you’re ok with carbs, you have a lot more options. Here’s my go-to: PLAIN Greek yogurt + chocolate protein drink + mint extract + a few ice cubes Sometimes I drop the mint and add PB2 (powdered peanuts - no extra oil/fat) or coffee instead of half the chocolate protein drink. If you want extra fruit flavor without the added sugar in fruit yogurt (or natural sugar/carbs of actual berries, consider fruit-flavored Stevia drops. Not 100% natural, but my doctor said it’s the best sweetener she can recommend - will not spike your blood sugar and can be used to add sweetness and flavor.) Again, I say all this as someone who has always HATED yogurt. But plain Greek yogurt is so high in easy protein that I forced myself to figure out a solution. Glad I did. Next project: Figuring out how to work in cottage cheese. My doctor said it’s another fantastic source of low carb, low calorie protein. Looking at it completely grosses me out (curds 🤮) but I’m hoping to just dump it in a blender without looking and combine it with something that makes it palatable. Sweet? Savory? Any recommendations??? |
