It’s fine to have a thread for spouses and family members. But the nominees are off limits. If you wouldn’t have a thread for Trump or for Biden in terms of fashion, then there shouldn’t be one for Harris.

I agree.

We wouldn’t do this to a male candidate. Ugh.

Pretty sure we talked about Hillary’s pant suits. Why would Kamala be off limits? This is a fashion board.

That wasn't the question. Do you talk about what men wear? If she wore her bathroom and fuzzy slippers I would still vote for her over that orange man!

I'm voting for Kamala, I've donated to Kamala, and I want to talk about Kamala's clothes.

+1

One reason I like talking about the clothes of women at this level is that women are still figuring out what it means to dress professionally and powerfully. It's still an open question and unlike men there is still not an obvious answer that will suit (pun intended) all women -- some women do pant suits while others do sheath dresses with a variety of jacket styles and still others do something else. Women have to figure out how much color to wear and what colors to wear because unlike men there is still on consensus on when and how to wear color in womens professional dress (and a woman who never wears color can be accused of being too dour or serious whereas a woman who wears a lot of color or wears colors people don't respond well to can be accused of being unserious or frivolous all without even technically citing her wardrobe).

This is actually a really important issue for a lot of professional women and any serious female presidential candidate is going to be highly influential on how womens clothing is perceived in the professional world. It will script people's expectations of what a powerful or competent woman looks like. It matters.

I disagree. I think standards for women and professional dress are pretty much set. What has changed is that environments are going more casual and that suit selection has absolutely stunk post pandemic. (I’ll be glad to see suits back in stores). Some women hate suits and therefore for something else. but it’s not at all in doubt what a woman of Harris, Pelosi, Clinton’s stature should wear in 2024.

Consdiering how differently these three women dress, I find this an odd statement. And throw in Nikki Haley and Elizabeth Warren, and you have fourth and fifth distinct looks. All have found looks that work for them, even Clinton though it's not quite my cup of tea. But in no way is it obvious the way black or navy suit, white or blue shirt, and neck tie is obvious for men.

Personally, I like this. But it does mean there is more room to make mistakes as well.

They are all appropriate and wear variants of professional dresses and suits with heels. This isn't magic.

The orange flame jacket Pelosi wore to the WH to meet with Trump! Iconic.

That was the meeting where it was Pelosi with about 15 men and they look like chastised little boys. Boy, are they scared of a strong and smart woman.

I love Nancy Pelosi’s style and I aspire to it. But I don’t think KH can pull it off, or should.

I agree with the PP who said KH plays it safe and doesn’t let her clothes speak for her. That’s the right call for where she is, when she’s still working to be “heard.” NP was in a more secure position, so she could afford to make some statements without risking them drowning out her actual voice.

KH should and probably will continue to keep it boring. Maybe a pop of color, an eye catching accessory (brooch, necklace, prob not earrings because you know), or a unique blouse under a remarkable jacket like today. She can break out the designers and fun stuff in her second term.

I think she'd look awful with a bob. I really like her hair.

+2 the soft layers are flattering and professional.

+3. Please god, no flair! I would like to see what PP means by a less boxy suit. I just don't see it.

No way. Her hair looks great.

+1 And the longer hair is more youthful which is pretty important in this race.

From the category of “the worst person you know just made a great point,” I give you this:

LOL! I thought that when I realized KH is going to be 60 this year! She's still a spring chicken.

I know there have been many humorous comparisons to Veep already, but say what you will about Selina Meyer, she has great style! I would love to see Kamala in something like the emerald sheath dress here https://www.featherfactor.com/2014/08/veep-season-2-the-wardrobe.html

She looks great. Professional and polished. She has beautiful (real) hair and a beautiful face. In all the photos of her in the last couple of days, she looks so vibrant and happy! That alone is so refreshing to me. I like her pantsuits. They fit her well and don't look frumpy. She looks authentic, like a really successful woman at ease with herself.

When I think about Kamala Harris, I always think about the video of her out in her leggings and running gear, when the election was finally called for Biden - and they were talking on the phone. During the call, she was legitimately earnest about the win, and dressed like every other busy, smart fit lawyer mom I know.

I like that she’s just a well dressed, super smart, highly successful woman who seems authentic.

Agree. Her suits are on the body conscious side and look great. No to flair and bobs.

Doesn’t she wear a bullet proof vest? Isn’t that why she’s always in a suit jacket?

Maybe? But it was the same look when she was AG and Senator.

She’s achieved her signature look and it works for her: authoritative, clean, yet feminine. I did appreciate seeing the Selena Meyers pics- kiddies to the stylist and JLD- she always looked amazing!

The Selina Meyer fashion was incredible and so perfect -- the stylist should have won an Emmy because I don't think people understand how hard it is to find the perfect female professional clothing like this. But JLD also has (or had) a completely perfect figure, very easy to dress--I think she's like a size zero here. I think finding this sort of "a little different but still always perfect and not at all weird" clothes for professional women takes a LOT of work, and I'm glad that's not what KH or her team are focused on right now. I think they are doing a phenomenal job with classics that look good and in which KH looks totally comfortable -- I'd hate for them to take a little risk and have it be riding up on her, or she's tugging at it making a speech.
Also, I once or twice looked up a dress that Selina Meyer was wearing on Veep and was absolutely blown away by how expensive those clothes were. No wonder it always looked perfect -- each of the dresses I looked up was several thousand dollars. Yes, you could get knock-offs (like those suggested by the thread posted), but they are not going to look the same -- this is impeccable tailoring and fabric, which is why it looks so phenomenal. I mean, here is just one shirt she wore, and it was $1,750.

There's a real risk for a politician if she shows up in a $10K outfit....that will be a news item about how out of touch they are.
