Food for thoughts.

I stay out of my kids’ love lives but might have mentioned a time or two to keep your distance from leftists. Mostly because of their need to make people around them miserable. God help the unlucky people they marry.

I was just reading about Ilhan Omar's daughter, the one who was arrested at Columbia. She sounds absolutely exhausting. Can't imagine living with someone like that.

You think Omar is representative of liberals?

She is representative a lot of younger liberals and certainly tolerated and even supported by the rest.

The science is settled.

This is very interesting

Not really

"The study was conducted by surveying 6,643 parents, 2,956 of whom lived with an adolescent, as well as 1,580 of the adolescents. The groups were asked about mental health and doctor visits, as well as parenting styles, relationship quality, personality traits, and views on the institution of marriage. They were also asked about social media use."

It is a self-reported survey.

The author of the paper works at the IFS. https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/institute-for-family-studies/
In review, the Institute for Family Studies (IFS) reports on and researches the role of marriage on the health of children and society. Most information on this website is rooted in fact and is well-sourced. There is little use of loaded language; however, story selection favors the conservative view of traditional marriage. While IFS does not come out directly and say they oppose same-sex marriage, they routinely promote two-parent heterosexual families as the ideal.

And while the PP posted a link from MSN, the article was originally posted in the Washington Examiner.

The original study was posted on IFS but then puts a political spin on how authoritative parenting is best and basically only used by conservatives and also that positive views on marriage institution play into it somehow.

The issue is that 1) its self-reported and 2) its self-reported. Oh, and 3) is being used politically.

Fyi, most psychiatric drugs are dispensed on the basis of self-reported symptoms.

But by using the term in a mean way it shuts down conversation and thinking which I do not support. Does anyone know of resources that may discuss this idea of liberals being mentally less tough/healthy in a way that is not offensive and derogatory?

I always assume it refers to white liberal americans who are clueless about people of color and always know what is best for POC.

The science is settled.

Liberal parents scored the lowest, largely because they are the least likely to successfully discipline their children.

WOW. This is damning. Any libs here going to self-reflect on your political affiliations/parenting problems?

I’m a liberal parent. Both my college kids are ADHD- One ADHD- Tyle Inattentive (a girl) and one Type Hyperactive (a boy). Both parents also ADHD— def. a genetic component. The boy is also partly out to our family as gay. Girl is still in the closet as asexual except to immediate family and favorite aunt. Plus, a couple of her friends know and a couple of mine (I need support from my BFF of 30 years sometimes).

Our family mostly does not know she is asexual. They are ready to support the gay kid— which is great, but we’ve all seen that coming for years. The asexual kid will be a surprise, and they may well deny asexuality exists, tell her she’ll “get better,” etc. if she gains weight (BMI well below 20 and issues with low estrogen may play a role— but for the last 6+ years, this has been her reality) and— most essentially— if s he works hard and doesn’t talk about Ed problems, she can still get and keep a man.

Hyperactive ADHD kid has diagnoses, medication and a support system. He would be counted as receiving mental health treatment no matter who his parents are

Inattentive ADHD kid who identifies as asexual? Her problems get overlooked. And in the family I grew up in? She’s considered a huge success on the grandparents FB feeds, except for the not dating thing. Her diagnoses would not be counted, she would not get therapy. She would be able to mask the ADHD (like I did) until it all fell part. She would be pushed to date a football player. In fact, we have had conservative members in our family that support her brother deny she is ADHD— and say we are lying for the attention, because she has decent grades and has is “so organized” (like painfully so). They also say “fake it till you make it” with boys— otherwise she won’t be marriageable (as I struggle to explain to her why “marriageable” that matters so much to the grandparents, when I it doesn’t matter at all to DH or I. And have started cutting “marriageable” discussions off at the pass.

Our asexual, ADHD-I kid would not have diagnoses in a conservative household and would not be getting academic and psychological supports. But she does in ours. Our willingness to listen to her and get her support and treatment doesn’t make us bad parents. It makes us parents who listen. And we heard loud and clear that this kid probability needs our support to talk to the family about her sexuality and to deal with her weight and with her ADHD as much as or more than the gay kid. Because the level of stress over these issues was so high. Her problems are just quieter.

I mean wow. Exhibit A. You have so many labels and diagnoses on your kids and have probably had them in counseling and therapy from birth and you likely are doing some things to amplify the very diagnoses they have received. Neither of your kids are heterosexual and maybe your late bloomer is asexual. I mean I feel like that’s a lot of focus on the sexuality —- and definitive labeling —- of kids going thru puberty. In my day almost every girl said she was bisexual for a while. Mean while almost all never actually hooked up with a girl and almost all married or settled down with men. It was trendy. Asexual is real but also trendy in part because these kids have been SO OVERWHELMED with discussions of sexuality and sexual identity. They can shut all that down by saying they are asexual.
Let your kids be kids. They aren’t science projects or psychology experiments. You are literally the perfect example of why kids of liberals are often depressed. So much oppressive analyzing of the kids!! Aggh!

Perfectly said. It's really quite amazing, and not in a good way.

Does that poster understand she illustrated the point of the study perfectly? I’m guessing no.

What?!?
No. Most drugs are NOT dispensed in the basis of self reported symptoms.

I'll give you an example: I had a sudden, severe tooth ache on a Friday afternoon. I couldn't get in to the dentist until Monday, so I went to urgent care and they prescribed me some painkillers. I would think most prescriptions are dispensed in a similar fashion.

Nope. If you want pain meds for a nasty fracture, doc can see the X-ray.

Funny how the pharma industry refuses to allow brain scans to see that chemical imbalance most Americans now seem to have. Why is that?

Once again no, MOST drugs are not prescribed in a similar fashion. Heart meds, cholesterol meds, diabetes meds, to name a few, rely on exam, test results and bloodwork before they are prescribed.
There are some, like in your example, that are prescribed based on pt report. But by far the majority are not.

There is no way this is real. I always knew liberal parents are to blame for how screwed up kids are these days but this is incredible.

Your kids will probably end up killing themselves or shooting up a school.

Why are you so triggered by the pp? What is so strange about any of that?
