Op here. He's only gone to each once last year as a junior with us. Wisconsin tour only and UGA tour plus out to a bar w a friend. The visits next month will be meeting other people in fraternities and going out, game, etc. I hope different as an admitted student vs touring as a junior.

Super odd he isn’t going to sit in on classes

don't worry, he'll be binge drinking with a bunch of frat bros instead.

No he will be meeting kids in frat, going out, touring business school hopefully, walking around campus and maybe drinking but not sure why you went from not attending a class to now binge drinking lol

what is your insistence that he meet with "kids in frats"?

It’s also really important to help kids that a college is just a school, not heaven, and not a doorway to wealth.

At some point, you go to school, do your best and try to power through the bad parts.

The people buying into the idea that a kid needs a college that’s a great fit may be feeding into dysfunction. Kids need a school that’s good enough, not a school that’s perfect.

Good point. Panic is def dramatic choice of words.

If you’re the OP: You replied to me there. I’m being a little harsh there. But just try to revel in the joy of having one of the, maybe, 25,000 luckiest kids on the world.

UGA has rush early so he so he would see if he clicks with them and at Wisconsin same- see how he likes the kids in there. It's not my insistence. It so happens, the two kids he knows are in frats and they have events or introduce d them to other people. He didn't seek out that aspect. Its who he knows.

I don’t think campus visits are that relevant here.

The real decision factors here are:

- Cost, if money is a big deal.

- Ease of getting the classes needed to graduate in four years.

- Ease of sliding into an easier major or drastically different major.

- Ease of adding a second major or minor.

- Ease of getting campus jobs and internships or jobs near campus.

- True cost of housing, and ability to get housing, over four years.

- Airport access.

The problem with campus visits is all you really know about is the buildings. The people are always changing.

How in the world do we know all of this or find out? Aside from airport access which can be annoying for the parent but the kids don't care. They have shuttles. UGA far. Madison has its own airport but it ain't cheap!

If he could combine a piece of all of them, he would have the perfect school. I think it's hard to choose one that is lacking in certain areas and also hard to let go of a school that is so great in a lot of ways.

A lot of people are telling you to relax, but I find it hard to believe that parents (especially on this board) are just sitting back, letting their child make this decision without an ounce of worry or thought on their part.

Thank you! I agree. No way the parents are involved and giving their opinion

OP here- UGA offered money (about 10k a year) Wisconsin none and i think it's about 50k

I'm having such anxiety about the rushed timing, or if he gets sick and can't visit when he plans and him not being able to decide. I can't believe it's come down ot the wire. He has travel and a senior spring break trip and then a sports thing he doesn't want to miss first weekend in April. Do these second visits and/or tours once they're admitted really help seal the deal? He visited both a year ago w just us went out briefly. The return visits are for games, meeting kids in frat, one seeing tour of business school, and I guess just more overnight w kids who are students there.

Yes, the visits at this stage absolutely help, and yes many kids make the decision down to the wire. It’s a huge life choice and the decision should not be rushed. He should take every day he is entitled to on this decision.

Bless your heart. No, these are not the only or even main decision factors for an admitted student. Campus culture and learning about the nuances of the school are a huge factor, and thus additional in-person visits to ask current students his detailed questions are 100% worth it. Many colleges have separate admitted student visits (get paired up with a current freshman & stay overnight on campus) that give your student a completely different perspective compared to the standard prospective student tour with mom & dad.

To each their own! I find that more important than if a building is pretty, if one professor isn't great or if the airport is closer. Meaning, fitting in with the kids and the vibe (Greek or not Greek) is more of a dealbreaker

To each their own! Fitting in and being comfortable with other students and the campus vibe is more telling than if a building is pretty, if one professor isn't good, or if an airport is 20 min further. Whether Greek on non Greek! As I said before, his contacts who he is hanging with, both happen to be in frats so naturally will introduce him to their friends.
